Sencha Special Grade Yamato from Upton Tea Imports
Style: Sencha – Region: Japan65 / 100 Aroma: 6/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 4/5
Aug. 16th, 2022
This is an unexciting but perfectly drinkable sencha, that is offered at a fair price by Upton. There is a little iron and spinach in the flavor, but not enough to be irritating. It wouldn't hurt to some of this in your cupboard.

Half-litre pot at home, made from a sample included in the tea company's Advent Tea Calendar (2020) and consisting of very fine Sencha leaves, some of them even pulverised - not a good sign in a tea from a respectable company selling quality products. Pours clear very pale green (against white china), with no sediment....

Update:
I found a way to brew it better. 80ºC water, 110ml water per 2 tsp of tea, 20 seconds for the first cup, 20-25 seconds for the second cup... The tea is very, very grassy. It's more grassy than any other sencha I've ever had (or any green tea, for that matter). It's not buttery. It's more like brewing a nice, ...
Shin-cha Super Premium (Tokujo-can) (2020) from Maeda-en
Style: Shincha – Region: Japan88 / 100 Aroma: 9/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 3/5

I was surprised, but also not, about this super premium shincha. You see, I know my tastes and I know that I've loved some "cheap" teas because even though they were inexpensive, they were great teas. I've also had some disappointing experiences with really expensive teas. So, I purchased this with that knowledge somew...

This is a great, fresh fukamushi-cha. I really enjoyed it. I actually got three cups out of 2tsp of leaves, rather than just two cups (the typical amount for this kind of tea). It's very full-bodied, has the typical cloudiness and rich flavor of fukamushi (which is extra steamed).
I went with a lower temperature bec...
Sencha KKH5 (Nr. 207) from Carstensens Tehandel
Style: Sencha – Region: Japan70 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 4/5

Half-litre pot at home. Pours clear pale straw with no sediment. Mild aroma of green tea leaves, with hints of pine. Clean, bitterish flavour of green tea, leaving a slightly rough and astringent palate. Refreshing, well-balanced and evoking memories from my short trip to Japan eight years ago. Not in the cheap end (50...

Despite having a wide spectrum of experiences with TJ's teas (from excellent to revolting...but mostly good), I somehow thought this would be a cheap knockoff and not very high quality. Somewhat surprisingly, while not the best bagged green I've had (that would be an unbranded tea my daughter brought back from Japan)...

Standard decaf green tea. I would not distinguish this as a special "sencha" one might look for. I was hoping Yamamotoyama's decaf sencha would taste like sencha, but it just tastes like standard chinese decaf bulk cheap teabag tea. The taste of every decaf green tea I have tried is the same. The process of de-caffeina...

I had this tea at a local restaurant (in a bag) and got 2 cups out of 1 bag - even though the restaurant offered me a second bag. It had a slight grassy note but also a pleasant roasted flavor vaguely reminiscent of a barley or genmaicha. I really enjoyed this tea - hot - no lemon - no dairy - no sweetener.

This tea is not bad but it isn’t overwhelming. I generally prefer loose leaf anyway, as a cup of bagged tea often isn’t as strong as I like. It’s fairly easy to avoid bitterness in this tea, but it’s still good not to brew the tea too hot or too long — as is generally true for green teas. Not bad as a potenti...

A colleague left this on the "freebie" table at work, so naturally I indulged some. One of the best green teas I've had so far, this offering competes well with a couple of bagged generic (unbranded) green-tea specimens containing a little matcha powder that my daughter brought back from her honeymoon in Japan.

I don't have a lot of experience with brewing Japanese green tea, so I probably didn't brew this as well as it deserved. I brewed it in my gaiwan, figuring that shouldn't be too much different from brewing it in a shiboridashi. I ended up with a lot of small pieces of tea in my cup because I didn't have any kind of fil...

Surprisingly good for a tea bag. I feel like I've been saying that a lot lately (which reminds me that I have a couple reviews to add), but with all the terrible tea bags out there, it's still a surprise when a bagged tea taste much like the loose leaf version.
I'm not going to describe this in detail for two reaso...

Style: Sencha – Region: Shizuoka, Japan75 / 100 Aroma: 10/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 3/5
May. 14th, 2018
Sencha Scent of Mountains is a very aptly named tea. It has the most wonderful aroma of any tea I've ever had (beyond Lapsang Souchong) and it truly is an amazing sencha.
The scent can be described as vaguely forest-y with the rich buttery background of a proper sencha. It's quite difficult to describe, but it is tr...

This is how I remember sencha! Very strong green vegetal aroma and a seaweed-y flavour. It has a thick mouthfeel and the colour is light greenish yellow. The way I made it now, it didn't taste bitter like other senchas have before, which is a shame because I quite liked that bitterness and I feel that would really comp...

I drank a cup of this tea at Het Gouden Randje.
It has a vegetal aroma and a grassy flavour. The colour is a lovely yellow-green. It has a pleasant hint of bitterness (which reminds me of UNAMI's Kabuse Cha, which is my only previous run-in with sencha). There's no sweetness in the flavour, and even though I usually l...

Of all the pure teas I've gotten from David's, this is the first one to not stand out from the crowd. It is not a bad tea at all. Like mostly everything I've tried at David's, it is above average. It is just not as impressive as some of the other Greens and Oolongs I have purchased there. This is one of the lowest p...

I took the dégustation comparée (comparative tasting) of three green teas of a higher quality. This is one of the three I was served.

Thank you mighty leaf for this sample! This tea had a very pleasant flavor but was nearly aromaless, although what aroma it did have was nice.
Dry leaf initially doesn't smell great, but when I breathe in more deeply, there's a very pleasant smell that suggests sweetness. The leaf looks fairly large and also rathe...

This decaf certainly smells delicious. The dry teabag smells just like a sencha should. It's fresh, grassy, and a little seaweed. The tea is fine fannings, almost dust.
The tea steeps a bright green. The aroma, though a bit muted, is vegetal, like raw green beans.
The first taste is a strong, but pleasant bittern...

I'm not a fan of the "grassy" flavored green teas, and this one has that fresh scent without reminding me of newly mown grass. The flavor is medium bodied, when I steep for 3-4 minutes, not overpowering or bitter, A nice green tea for a mostly black and oolong drinker

Not being experienced specifically with Sencha varieties of green tea, I didn't know what to expect when grabbing a box of this to bring home from Austria. [This tea is sold in SPAR supermarkets, fairly ubiquitous over a lot of Europe and available online.]

I usually think of tea as being more about the aroma than the flavor, but this tea was intensely flavorful, and I thought its flavor was what made it most interesting and enjoyable.

This was one of the best senchas I've had from a tea company that is not a Japanese company.
It smells amazing! The dry leaf is incredibly aromatic, and the aroma is rich, sweet, and very interesting. It has sweet vegetal notes which quickly develop into a warm, mellow, nutty, and slightly toasty aroma, hinting at ...
