Picture of Vietnam Ha Giang Black

Vietnam Ha Giang Black from Simpson & Vail

Style: Black Tea – Region: Ha Giang

83 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 4/5
Dec. 30th, 2022

The aroma is really nice with notes of dried fruit. The taste is pretty nice too and it has very little astringency which is how I like it, however there is a bit of bitterness and the tea is also slightly watery and not as thick bodied as I’d like. Even with all those criticisms though, it’s still a perfectly plea...

Oct. 17th, 2022

One-litre pot at home, made from small, sapphire grey and dark brown curly organic leaves. Pours clear dark copper brown (against white china) with no sediment. Deep aroma of leaves, with pronounced malty touches. Bitter, but not aggressive, flavour of black tea leaves, with malty notes and spicy hints. Astringent pala...

Upton Vietnamese White Tea from Upton Tea Imports

Style: White Tea – Region: Vietnam

50 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 2/5 Value: 1/5
Oct. 1st, 2020

This expensive white tea from Vietnam offers little that is new imo. It is very mild, with a pleasant white peach taste. The aroma is its most impressive feature, and it made me think of fruit salad, flowers, and woods. The second infusion was more flavorful than the first. A white tea enthusiast might find somethi...

Jul. 24th, 2020

Half-litre pot at home, made from dark brown leaves of pure black (= red) Ban Lien tea. Pours nearly clear copper brown (against white china) with no sediment. Clear aroma of black tea, with leafy notes and mild nutty touches. Delicate, bitter, leafy flavour bordering on nutty and sweetish notes. Mildly astringent pala...

Season's Pick Vietnam Eastern Beauty Oolong from Upton Tea Imports

Style: Oriental Beauty – Region: Vietnam

40 / 100 Aroma: 6/10 Flavor: 1/5 Value: 1/5
Jan. 29th, 2020

This gets some good reviews on Upton's website and sells for an above average price, but it didn't do much for me. The aroma is pleasant enough, but the flavor is bland and weak. I can't recommend this one.

Ancient Forest Black from Zhi Tea

Style: Black Tea – Region: Vietnam

84 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 4/5
Jan. 2nd, 2019

This was among the most interesting teas I've tried in a long time, both aromatically and with respect to mouthfeel. It was the first pure tea I've tried from Zhi, and it may be the first tea from this company to wow me. It had an unusual character somewhere in between that of a black tea and a Pu-erh, but not like rip...

85 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 5/5
Mar. 22nd, 2018

A very pleasant tea that was easy to steep and easy to appreciate. Like a good Yunnan tea but a little smoother.

Thank you to Simpson & Vail for the sample!

Dry leaf smells really beautiful and kind of fascinating: malty but with strong vegetal notes. It looks and smells a lot like a Yunnan tea, which makes sense...

Groen Vietnam Ban Lien from Het Gouden Randje

82 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 4/5
Oct. 26th, 2017

I have asked about Vietnamese teas so many times that the owner of Het Gouden Randje ordered this tea! She tells me she likes it too and that she'd already sold some to another customer, and thanked me for the tip. She also advised me to steep it multiple times, at least three.

It's cheap, too; just €5 per 100 g. ...

Four Seasons from De Theefabriek

Style: Four Seasons Oolong – Region: Vietnam

78 / 100 Aroma: 9/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 4/5
Jul. 10th, 2017

I wanted to try this tea because De Theefabriek's other Vietnamese teas have been absolutely amazing.

The dry tea doesn't have a very strong aroma, but it's very sweet and almost reminds of some candy mix.
Both the aroma and the flavour of the tea remind me of Het Gouden Randje's Formosa Jade Oolong. I'm still stru...

Sencha du Vietnam Bio from Unami

Style: Sencha – Region: Vietnam

64 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 2/5
Jul. 1st, 2017

I drank this tea in the Unami Maison de Thé in Lille. It was served prepared in a small teapot. This means it was made exactly as it should, though I didn't get to see any leaves.

I don't have any prior experience with senchas, so I can't compare this with others. I have tasted a few other Vietnamese green teas, an...

Since I fell in love with Nam Lanh OP from the same brand but I currently prefer green teas, I decided to try this one as it's also from Vietnam.
And I was in luck! It tastes like a green version of the Nam Lanh black tea. It smells the same and, best of all, it's got the same intense "smoldering" flavour.
I drink bo...

77 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 4/5
Jun. 6th, 2017

Other Vietnamese teas I've had have been fantastic, so I decided to give this a try.
It's good enough, it's got a little bit of what I love so much about Nam Lanh OP and Pin Ho Jade from De Theefabriek, the flavour I can best describe as "smoldering", especially if you use a generous amount of leaf. It's fine for two ...

Jun. 6th, 2017

I love this tea. It caught my eye because I'd never had Vietnamese tea before. It turned out to taste amazing. The price is quite decent, too.
I use half a teaspoonful of leaves per cup. It's a bit smokey, but not the way smoked teas are, a little sweet, a little spicy. The best word I can come up with to describe it ...

Vietnamese Black OP from Harney and Sons

73 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 5/5
Feb. 16th, 2016

A medium-bodied tea with nutty and chocolatey aromas, I can see this being likely to please people who enjoy hot chocolate.

The dry leaf has a strong smell of sweet nutty candy, like marzipan, pistacio, milk chocolat, or hazelnut creme. It reminds me of those Mozartkugeln, the German candies with layers of hazelnut...

Style: Black Tea – Region: Vietnam

67 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 2/5
Oct. 22nd, 2014

Purchased in the TeaGschwender shop in Regensburg, Germany.

Dry leaf is not very aromatic; it faintly suggests cocoa.

Brews up a very typical cup. I used TeaGschwendner's recommendation of 4 minutes, but used less leaf than they recommend, and this produced results that I liked. I was able to make a second stee...

Lotus from The Persimmon Tree

Style: Flavored Green Tea – Region: Vietnam

90 / 100 Aroma: 9/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 4/5
Aug. 2nd, 2014

The aroma of the dry leaves is pretty intense, very strong anise aroma with touches of honey, yeasty bread, green stems, and just the faintest hint of pepper. It is strange to call such a spicy aroma heady, but it is like sniffing a spicy flower.

The first steep starts off quite sweet and rich, like honey drizzled y...

I'm so bummed about this one. The dry leaves have a sharp chemical smell, and the brewed tea just tastes off to me.

When brewed for 30 seconds, the aroma smells like bandaids. Then a little floral, like jasmine. Then minty bandaids. When I taste it after 30 seconds: bandaids

30 more: floral bandaids
3 min:...

Jun. 7th, 2013

Another fascinating tea from Arbor Teas, very different from anything else I've tried yet.

The dry leaf has an interesting appearance, with thick leaves that curve around in heterogeneous shapes. The leaf also has a very pungent and pleasing aroma, suggesting of herbs.

Brews a rich-smelling, dark cup. Tones of ...

Vietnam Green Organic from Simpson & Vail

Style: Green Tea – Region: Vietnam

63 / 100 Aroma: 6/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 4/5
Jun. 18th, 2012

A unique green tea, almost bizarre. Large but tightly-curled dry leaf reminds me of some Korean and Ceylon greens. The leaf has a strong, peppery aroma, and is also suggestive of other Vietnam green teas I've sampled. Leaf is slow to infuse and produces many infusions. Flavor is remarkably consistent through differ...

Jun. 18th, 2012

I agree with Simpson and Vail that this is a superior tea; it's definitely my favorite tea to come out of Vietnam yet, and is on par with some of the better Taiwanese oolongs.

This oolong has a bright green leaf, loosely rolled into fairly large pellets of unequal size. It unfurls quite quickly into medium-size, wh...

Dry leaf has a mild, but very pleasing aroma, surprisingly suggestive of sweetness.

The brewed cup has a lighter golden color, than one would expect from the dark color of the leaf. Flavor is smooth, with a honey-like sweetness, a pleasing crispness, and minimal astringency. Full-bodied yet with a cooling quality....

This tea really surprised me!
The mix of fruity and malty aspects really pulled it together.
Dark chocolate, rose, black currant, vanilla, wheat, oak and cocoa are just a few of the descriptors I used!
