Black Pearl Tea from Lipton Tea

Taking garbage out of a plastic can and putting it into a golden can doesn't increase the value of the garbage. Lipton's attempt at polishing trash isn't fooling anyone.

I have enjoyed the loose leaf version of this tea for some time, and the tea bag version holds up well at transmitting the flavor, aroma and quality in a convenient form. I miss seeing the teas unfurl, and the color brew up but it is still very satisfying. I wish this tea was more widely available in the US. It is read...

I like this tea. It has a mild, but full flavor. I think I like all of the Ceylon teas I've tasted. I added cream and sugar.

A friend brought this back from Europe for me. The caption on this tea cracks me up...'prickelndem' is translated as 'scintillating', and the combination of "typical" (which does not have the same connotation as the German "typischer") leads to a bit of a contradiction: "A typical Ceylon tea with a scintillating flavo...

Ceylon Orange Pekoe from Twinings

Style: Ceylon Black Tea – Region: Matale, Sri Lanka (Dimbula)

63 / 100 Aroma: 5/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 4/5
Feb. 28th, 2011

A classic British-style Ceylon tea. Medium-strength black tea with a fairly clean, cool taste. Moderate bitterness and astringency, little sourness. Maltier and deeper than some Ceylons.

Above average among Twinings offerings and better than what I typically expect from a tea bag. This is an example of a tea tha...

An incredibly smooth black tea with not a hint of astringency. This was my first Golden Moon tea. I was favorably impressed.

Ceylon Single Estate from Rishi Tea

Style: Ceylon Black Tea – Region: Sri Lanka / Ceylon

53 / 100 Aroma: 5/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 3/5
Oct. 31st, 2010

Ceylon is not my favorite type of black tea, but I'm always blown away by what Rishi manages to come up with, so I was curious to try this one.

Brewed as recommended, this cup is dark but clear, and of below-average overall strength for a black tea. However, it is also more full-bodied than average. The aroma is s...

Ceciliyan Estate FBOPF Ex. Spl. from Upton Tea Imports

Style: Ceylon Black Tea – Region: Ratnapura, Sri Lanka

63 / 100 Aroma: 5/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 4/5
Oct. 26th, 2010

Tiny leaves with abundant gold buds. By itself it was only a so-so tea, but with the addition of milk it took a huge leap forward into being very, very good, with a hint of malt on top of a solid dry oak leaf and floral note. The difference was truly amazing. and worthy of the Ex. Spl designation. I would recommend ...

Black Pearl Tea from Lipton Tea

Style: Ceylon Black Tea – Region: Sri Lanka / Ceylon

57 / 100 Aroma: 6/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 3/5
Jun. 14th, 2010

Surprisingly different from Lipton teabags, and surprisingly high quality. Rich, malty aroma, some bitterness in the aftertaste but smoother up front. A remarkably pleasing, full-bodied tea. I recommend brewing for about 3 minutes...more and it becomes too tannic.

My main complaint about this one, like all of Lip...

May. 11th, 2010

Well....about all I can say for this tea is that it is a cut above the Lipton teabags. Although I'm not sure I can even say that, because the teabags possess an unmistakable musty flavor that, although not particularly tasty, is unique. This is just mediocre black tea.

Upton suggests that this tea has "raisin like nuances" and I'd go even father and be more direct: it smells and tastes a like raisins, and leaves an aftertaste of raisins! Smooth but without being weak. A fair amount of the rice-like quality that I find in many Ceylon teas, and almost a hint of wintergreen. Medium-b...

Pure Ceylon Tea from New English Teas

Style: Ceylon Black Tea – Region: Sri Lanka / Ceylon

60 / 100 Aroma: 5/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 4/5
Apr. 24th, 2010

After being highly disappointed by the English Afternoon Tea of the same brand, this was a pleasant surprise. Again, very fine dust/fannings in the teabag, so I wasn't expecting much.

When I brewed the tea though I tasted an astonishingly complex, gentle Ceylon with a distinct high-grown character reminiscent of te...

A solid, if somewhat generic black tea that is dark and full-bodied but tends on the mellow side of flavor.

The aroma is typical for a Ceylon black tea, and has only mild nuances of dried fruit and nut (like Upton suggests). I'm not really feeling the "citrus notes" but I do notice a sweet aftertaste. There's much...

An honest mountain Ceylon with clean flavor and aroma. Slightly weak brew, however.

(The Keurig K-Cup version of this Bigelow tea is better than the bag.)

This is the first broken-leaf Ceylon from Upton that has been drinkable to me, and I'm surprised to find it completely lacking in the harshness that the other ones I've tried have had.

The aroma is totally unlike any black tea I have tried...it reminds me of rice and rice pastries. I like Upton's description "brigh...

Jan. 7th, 2010

In contrast to Upton's broken-leaf teas from Darjeeling and other Himalayan regions, I am continuously disappointed by Upton's broken-leaf Ceylons, and this one continues the pattern.

Brewed as recommended, this tea is undrinkably strong. I recommend using less leaf and a much shorter steeping time. Even then, it'...

This is an insanely strong tea. I find the brewing instructions to be way off...following them it's undrinkable. I tried using about half as much leaf and brewing for 1 minute and it was about right. Steep it any longer and it becomes painfully astringent and also quite bitter.

When brewed briefly and with little...

Aroma strongly of wintergreen...almost unbelievable that this is just tea...it tastes almost as if wintergreen oil has been added! Outside of the surprising wintergreen aroma, this tea is dark, robust, and very full. Fairly bitter, astringent, and tannic. The rest of the aroma is typical of a Ceylon.

Like the Cey...
