Darjeeling (Loose) from Twinings

Style: Darjeeling Black Tea – Region: Darjeeling, India

57 / 100 Aroma: 6/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 2/5
Apr. 4th, 2019

At first glance, the tea looks odd for Twinings. Twinings's loose teas are usually broken leaf, but the pieces are much larger and appear to be better quality than what goes into the teabags. The Darjeeling is different. The loose tea pieces are tiny and uniform and look exactly like what goes into the teabags. Like mo...

Kalami Assam Indian Tea from Ahmad Tea

Style: Assam – Region: Assam, India

85 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 4/5
Mar. 30th, 2019

Ahmad Tea provides some of the best values in entry-level loose leaf tea out there.

Their Kalami Assam beautifully exemplifies all that we adore about Assam teas. The leaf aroma is malty, earthy, and slightly vegetal.

I used 1 tsp per cup infused for about 4 minutes. Brew is richly brown and copper in the cup. ...

Royal Blend from Fortnum & Mason

Style: Black Tea – Region: Blend

73 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 3/5
Mar. 27th, 2019

This has a smooth, rich flavor, although with a touch of sharpness (short steeping time is better). It practically begs to have milk added, which I don't typically do. Taken black, I find it a little lacking in sweetness. The aroma comes more from the Ceylon and is pleasantly nutty, while the Assam ensures a malty fini...

Black Tea from Farmer Brothers

Style: Black Tea – Region: ?????

71 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 5/5
Mar. 27th, 2019

I was surprised off the bat by the unexpected aroma from the brewing tea. Instead of an Assam or Ceylon blend, it smells like inexpensive Yunnan teabags like Foojoy. It's smoky, earthy and woodsy.

The flavor reinforces my guess that this blend is predominantly Chinese. Astringent without bitterness, this tea tastes ...

English Breakfast from Stash Tea

Style: English Breakfast – Region: Blend

56 / 100 Aroma: 6/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 3/5
Mar. 24th, 2019

The most notable aspect of the flavor is that it's tannic, although not overly so. Still, it lacks much else to recommend it. I'd rather it had a bit more citrus to balance it, but there's just not a lot to it.

This strikes me as a tea perhaps intended for coffee drinkers looking to switch it up. It's also mild en...

Select Yunnan Black from Imperial Tea Court

80 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 5/5
Mar. 22nd, 2019

The aroma of this tea is clean and straightforward, with a slight pungency that perks you up. The taste is simple, mellow, and lightly sweet. It's a great tea to drink slowly, savoring the richness with every sip. The liquor is fairly dark but that doesn't really detract from the taste.

Although at the lowest end of...

This has a pleasant, earthy aroma that fades too quickly once you drink it. I was let down by the fairly bland taste. It's labeled as a blend of Ceylon and Indian teas; the Ceylon taste comes through the strongest and there isn't much to it past that.

It's acceptable with some additions, but I doubt I'd get it agai...

I had one called China Panyang Congou from Upton, which is also currently unavailable. I'm guessing this is the same thing. It is very enjoyable and tastes different from most of the teas I can think of. There is a pronounced barley/pumpernickel flavor. I've been brewing beer lately and this reminded me of the taste...

I usually enjoy Upton's British style tea blends and this is no exception. The mix of malty Assam with a lightly smoky Yunnan makes a super all-around tea. It is good with milk, or in a masala chai, and lemon and sugar, while eccentric, also works.

Darjeeling Tea from Tradition

Style: Darjeeling Black Tea – Region: Darjeeling, India

88 / 100 Aroma: 9/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 5/5
Mar. 12th, 2019

The oversized bags contain nearly 3g of medium-sized (for loose leaf tea) broken leaf pieces. It's definitely not a typical Darjeeling, though. Most Darjeelings are less oxidized than other black teas and tend to have more vegetal or floral aroma notes. This one's different. There's no green apparent on the leaves and ...

Well, I hate to be in such disagreement with Alex Zorach, who knows so much more about tea than me, but my reaction to this went something like this: "blekh." You need to be careful with this. Use a lot and steep it for a while and it will be harsh and bitter. But a modest amount and short steeping time makes a somewh...

This is called an Irish breakfast, but for my tastebuds it seemed closer to an English breakfast or even a mainstream prebagged tea. It is pretty versatile and mellow. It goes best with milk but can take lemon or be used for masala also. Good.
