Upton East Frisian Sunday Tea from Upton Tea Imports
Style: Flavored Black Tea – Region: Assam, India75 / 100 Aroma: 9/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 3/5
Jan. 11th, 2022
This is a medium strength tea with some light, woody tannins. It goes best with milk, but it works with lemon and sugar also. It has vanilla in it, and that helps give it a nice aroma, and has a subtle impact on the flavor. Overall, it is a good, versatile tea that I would buy again.

Dec. 27th, 2021
This was a special release from Upton, meant to be a replica of one of the teas tossed overboard during the Boston Tea Party. It is a blend of China Congou and Chinese Bohea - the latter is a new one for me. It originates in the Wuyi Mountains and may have been the first black tea sold to the British. Overall this i...

Here is a successful marriage of black tea with cacao. When drunk with milk and sugar, a pleasant chocolate flavor emerges that blends well with the base tea, which (surpise!) one can taste. This is a nice treat from Upton.

Style: Yunnan Gold – Region: Yunnan, China80 / 100 Aroma: 9/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 5/5

Here is a nice Yunnan. The aroma is fresh and woodsy, like taking an April walk in a park. The flavor is smooth and mild, with a little bit of astringency on the palate. It is well worth the modest price.

I am happy with the 2021 version of this. The amount of spices hits the spot, and they blend well with the base tea. It is a little on the mild side, with vanilla, clove, almond, and a touch of citrus. I like it best with honey and milk, but other combinations also get the job done. Very reasonably priced too.

I have ordered this tea many times over the years, and am surprised I did not rate it yet. In the past it has been a well-priced and full-flavored tea experience, and a go-to when I wanted something malty and smoky, with a little milk and no sugar. My most recent purchase of it was less enjoyable. This time a harsh,...

Harney's Paris blend is an interesting and likeable variation on the Earl Grey formula. In addition to bergamot, this has vanilla, black currant, and caramel flavors added to black and oolong teas. It makes for a sweet and festive tea that goes well with milk and sugar.

This is a new one for me - a fukamushi tea. It looks like a bancha, but according to Upton's website fukamushi is its own category. A websearch shows me that it is a moderately to fully steamed green tea, usually a sencha. This has a wonderful earthy, fresh woodlands aroma. The taste is light and leafy, with a fair...

This is a light sencha with a little fruit flavor to it. Yuzu is similar to lime, but this did not have a strong citrus taste. I bet it would be good iced. A pleasant tea.

This has a hoity-toity description, claiming that it is the "beverage of choice" at the Palm Court in New York City's Plaza Hotel. I actually went there once, several years ago, and had a cup of tea, which I don't remember as being anything special. Despite the pedigree, this is a fairly ordinary cup of tea - it is s...

An interesting concoction, in which East meets West. The chocolate is not very strong, but it is noticeable. It was a little odd at first, but it did grow on me.

Are my taste buds missing something here? This is an expensive oolong, and Alex Z. gave it a good review. But it really did not do much for me, sorry to say. There is a little floral aroma, and it tasted light and fairly simple. Nothing to get excited over. Maybe I did not get a good bag of it for some reason or o...

Feb. 24th, 2021
Part of Upton's Great Tea Race Collection, this Darjeeling crosses the finish line with a fine aroma and impressive flavor. There are notes of caramel, fresh leaves, and mild tannins. It is very expensive however - it costs 3 times the price of an ordinary Darjeeling, but does not offer 3 times the quality imo. Nice...

Feb. 9th, 2021
Here is a blend of China Congou and Lapsang Souchong that works out quite well. The LS is the dominant flavor, with the other tea smoothing and mellowing the taste a bit. It goes well with plant milk. I thought the price was a little high for this type of tea, but I would reach for it again if I was in the mood for a...

This blend of Indian, Chinese, and Taiwanese teas has a very good aroma imo - toasty and woody, with a little caramel and butterscotch. The flavor is reasonably robust but not heavy, with a dash of metallic tannins. I had it with milk, and tried it with lemon and sugar too. That also worked out well, and which is un...

Jan. 3rd, 2021
The only other reviews so far give it 90 and a 100 points, so it looks like this is a contrasting view. I found it to be both a little bitter and bland, without much floral flavor or aroma. I got a sachet of this as a freebie with another order, so they may have been giving away some out-of-date product.

This was another good value tea offered by Harney & Sons. Hats off to their tea blenders, that is an area they seem to excel in - taking mediocre teas, adding to them, and making them into something better. This seems like a cheap Chinese black tea that is nicely spiced up (with citrus, almond, clove, safflowers, and...

This is a blend of black teas from Assam, Darjeeling, and Nilgiri. The first 2 I am pretty familiar with, but the latter not really. As the name suggests, it is an all purpose black tea. For me it works best with some kind of milk, but it is decent with lemon also. One reviewer on their site drinks it plain, so I t...

This seems to be an inexpensive Chinese gunpowder tea perked up with some spices - cardamom, cinnamon, nutmeg, coriander, fennel, ginger, and artificial flavorings to be exact. The resulting flavor is light but good, and the price is reasonable. Interestingly, they do not recommend preparing this chai in the traditio...

This sencha does not taste or smell like anything else that I can think of. It is complex and nutty, with some broth, toasted rice, and lychee in the flavor and aroma. It is mostly lacking the sharp, capsicum/grass flavor common to inexpensive green teas. It is not a bargain, but I think it is a worthwhile purchase ...

Every once in a while, this low income dude likes to have a taste of what the rich imbibe. In this case, rich Japanese, probably. At the princely price of around $14 per ounce, this just might be the most expensive tea I have ever tried. And my predictable reaction is that it is not worth that kind of money, but it ...

This expensive white tea from Vietnam offers little that is new imo. It is very mild, with a pleasant white peach taste. Here is a middle of the road English breakfast offering from Upton. It is pretty smooth, with some malty notes and tannins. It is not too heavy, nor too light. Here is a nice organic tisane, made predominantly with chamomile and bolstered with some fruits, rose hips, and hibiscus. So it tastes mostly of chamomile, but with a steely, acidic undertone. The aroma is fairly strong and floral. The price is a little high, but I guess that is due to the organic ingredients. This ...
