Assam Malty Broken Herrentee from Teekörbchen Gelnhausen

Jan. 29th, 2019

A remarkably smooth tea able to be brewed super strongly. This tea reminded me of Kenyan teas: it was strong and smooth, and not terribly aromatic, but with some of the qualities I like best in a tea.

This was the lowest grade of the three teas I tried from this company, and it was still surprisingly good. The leaf ...

A brisk Assam with a slight harshness, but also more interesting than most.

Thank you to my friend Janina for bringing this back to me from Germany! This was one of three Assams I sampled from Teekörbchen Gelnhausen, and it was good, and aptly described. It's also the first tea I've sampled from Nagaon, a district ...

Solid Assam, with a woody flavor and some ironic tannins, but still smooth. Certainly worth the bargain price.

Thanks to Greg and Inge for this Christmas gift. A malty and complex Assam that feels very nice on the palate. This went very well with soy milk, which is not what always happens when I add soy milk. A treat for sure.

Darjeeling Estate Organic Black Tea from Wegmans

Style: Darjeeling Black Tea – Region: Darjeeling, India

56 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 2/5
Jan. 21st, 2019

Kind of expensive - and it is NOT a first flush (light/sweet) Darjeeling - but it is good. Not a holy grail but a decent variety for Darjeeling - and I love Wegman's, so there's that. Twinings bagged Darjeeling (likely Autumnal Flush) is darker but smoother. This one (Wegman's Darjeeling) comes loose and brews up fu...

Cheap Darjeeling? How is this possible? I am a first flush Darjeeling kinda gal and Twinings actual makes a (definitely not first flush, but good enough)bagged Darjeeling that is CHEAP and easy to find. AI can't even believe my office is stocking this - and a also Irish and English Breakfast, Earl Grey, Orange & Spi...

Jan. 15th, 2019

For a simple tea, this has to have the most convoluted backstory for any I've tried. First, the tea itself: it had remarkably weak dry-bag and wet-bag aromas for what seem to be a high-quality, single-estate tea, though in-cup, the smell was richer and fairly basic. The flavor wasn't particularly strong or bold, but ...

Somehow I let this sample that I bought slip through the cracks and only am trying it now. Unfortunately, it's no longer for sale. A shame, because I thought it outstanding!

The dry leaf is quite beautiful, short, curly leaves with lots of golden tips, and has a complex and fascinating fragrance, sort of fruity, a r...

Style: Darjeeling Black Tea – Region: Darjeeling, India

68 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 4/5
Jan. 10th, 2019

The dry tea has the same basic smell of other blended Darjeelings. It's smells of dry leaves in autumn, a bit oaky and of raw pecans.

I tend to find Darjeeling teas to be somewhat more delicate than I'd prefer. This one is no exception, but I also wouldn't call it weak. It's lightly astringent with a very mild bitte...

Dec. 20th, 2018

A rich, deep, dark Assam that was still quite smooth and able to be brewed strongly. Among my favorite teas I've sampled from Murchie's, this would be a great choice for an everyday breakfast tea.

The dry leaf of this has a mild but very pleasant smell, sort of deep, soft, a little foresty, with a hint of wintergree...

Dec. 9th, 2018

I bought this tea as a grey market item from a nearby Indian grocery store. Lately, I've tried and enjoyed a number of teas from Indian brands and this one is no exception.

As far as appearance, the dry CTC "crumbs" are larger and slightly lighter in color than those of most other CTC teas. The brewing tea reminds m...

Nov. 27th, 2018

A fairly typical Assam of slightly-above-average quality. This was one of four teas we tried on our recent visit to Socra Tea Detroit, a great cafe and tea shop that I recommend checking out if you're in the area.

I've now tried three teas from Tonganagaon estate, a tea garden in upper Assam that seems to produce sm...

The aroma has a slight earthy with hint of chocolate smell. Taste is clean without a strong after taste, slight hint of honey, smooth and mild. Nice amber color. I made it 'strong' with heaping teaspoons and 5 minute steep. This will be easy to drink all day. I never use milk or sugar.

Oct. 25th, 2018

A tricky-to-brew tea that reminded me a lot of green oolongs from Taiwan, and required a lower water temperature to brew to satisfaction.

The dry leaf, quite broken, is an intense green color, like a lot of good Darjeeling first flush. It looks exactly like pictured in the company photo (I appreciate honest photogra...

A beautifully aromatic tea that a strong bitterness and thin body. I found it tricky to brew to satisfaction. Thank you to Simpson & Vail for the free sample!

The flavor of this tea reminded me of something from my first sip, but what eluded me for quite a while. This description couldn't be ...

Seeyok First Flush Darjeeling from Coffee and Tea Exchange

Style: Darjeeling First Flush – Region: Darjeeling, India

88 / 100 Aroma: 9/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 5/5
Sep. 18th, 2018

With the most prominent notes being pineapple, cranberry, and lemongrass, this tea is almost like drinking tart fruit juice. I love it because of that, but I can see others disliking it for the same reason. I taste a bit of honey as well. First flush is stereotyped as floral, but I don't get a lot of that here. There a...

75 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 5/5
Jul. 30th, 2018

This actually tastes like Darjeeling: the fruity, woody notes are similar to the loose leaf Darjeeling teas I've had, and it even has that smooth muscatel flavor (or at least the flavor I taste in most Darjeeling tea that I associate with the word "muscatel"). I guess this shouldn't have surprised me as much as it did...

Jul. 18th, 2018

Lipton Darjeeling Tea used to be known as "Lipton Green Label" and is packaged for sale in India. I buy this tea as a gray market item at a local Indian convenience store.

This tea is better quality than one might expect from Lipton and is overall a medium-quality Darjeeling. The tea appears to be mostly whole, smal...

Style: Darjeeling Black Tea – Region: Darjeeling, India

70 / 100 Aroma: 9/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 2/5
Jul. 9th, 2018

The tea is made up of large, but broken pieces of leaf. The description says that the tea is graded TGFOP (Tippy Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe), though, which should be mostly whole leaves. There is a reasonable proportion of tips, so it is decent quality tea, but not as good as I expected from the description or the pri...

It's fine. It's just not for me. "Darjeeling" (where'd they come up with that name??) won't commit to woody, smoky, or neither. It's a little of each, and I like tea's that COMMIT to certain flavors... It's not distinctive enough, my friends. It just isn't, friends.
