Napoléon Tea from TWG Tea
Style: Flavored Black Tea – Region: Blend91 / 100 Aroma: 9/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 4/5
Mar. 27th, 2025
Napoléon Tea conquered me, quickly. Of all the samplers I sniffed in TWG's Bangkok store, this was one of the strongest, and certainly the most attractive to me in terms of choosing a priority for which ones to buy. The dry and in-cup aromas weren't quite as intense as the sampler, but still quite mouth-watering.

Singapore Breakfast Tea from TWG Tea
Style: Miscellaneous Blend – Region: Blend88 / 100 Aroma: 9/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 4/5
Mar. 12th, 2025
Contrary to the established custom of a "breakfast tea", this isn't just a blend of black teas, or black tea with a mild flavoring. Instead, Singapore Breakfast mixes green tea, black tea, vanilla, and unspecified "rare spices". Given the fruitiness of both the aroma and flavor, and the known pieces in the mix, I sus...

Golden Earl Grey from TWG Tea
Style: Earl Grey Tea – Region: Blend78 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 3/5
Mar. 3rd, 2025
This tea came from a TWG shop in Bangkok, weighed and bagged onsite out of the top 1/4 of a wholesale bucket. As such, it smelled and tasted (and should be!) really fresh, and is excellent in quality on both counts. The dry aroma is quite fruity, more in a berry-like way than citrus, but with the bergamot orange stil...

Yellow Label Tea from Lipton Tea
Style: Black Tea – Region: Blend50 / 100 Aroma: 5/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 3/5
Feb. 18th, 2025
I got this tea at an eatery in Bangkok, and also from my daughter who lives there, and brought a bag home to try on the same well water in which I've reviewed other teas here. I'm not convinced it was worth hauling back its couple grams of dry weight in the suitcase.
In every way, this tea struck me as essentiall...

Morning Storm Tea from TWG Tea
Style: Black Tea – Region: Blend75 / 100 Aroma: 9/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 3/5
Feb. 11th, 2025
This is the first of a handful of loose teas I purchased, for somewhat of a high price (even in the otherwise favorable baht/USD conversion), at TWG's nicely done Emporium Mall store in Bangkok. Now that I'm home, they'll be rotated in behind teas being used up.
Admittedly, I got Morning Storm mainly for the name, ...

Chamomile Blush from Teavana
Style: Chamomile Blend – Region: Blend33 / 100 Aroma: 5/10 Flavor: 2/5 Value: 1/5
Jan. 6th, 2025
Chamomile Blush will make one blush all right—not for the usual reasons, but from the shame or embarrassment of paying so much for such a weak, weird tea.
The stated ingredients are simple enough: chamomile, spearmint, rose, and lemongrass. The result is a disjointed, odd combination of flavors that, in my exp...

Peppermint Bark from Great Value
Style: Flavored Black Tea – Region: Blend59 / 100 Aroma: 4/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 3/5
Jan. 1st, 2025
Peppermint Bark doesn't have much bite, but it's still fairly tasty. Overall, the tea fulfills its mission to replicate the flavor of the candy, with a creamy, smooth, almost savory taste, and a reasonably good balance between the mint and chocolate. That's because cocoa shells and carob are used to flavor the tea, i...

Cocoa Berry Black Tea Blend from Trader Joe's
Style: Flavored Black Tea – Region: Blend76 / 100 Aroma: 9/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 4/5
Dec. 21st, 2024
The RateTea page for Trader Joe's states, "Many of Trader Joe's teas are experimental and are only available for short runs before being discontinued." Such appears to be the case for this interesting blend, which is specifically advertised on the website as "Limited time only!" as of Dec. 2024. Maybe that's because ...

Maple Toffee from Murchie's Tea & Coffee Ltd
Style: Miscellaneous Blend – Region: Blend87 / 100 Aroma: 9/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 4/5
Dec. 9th, 2024
For a thoroughly delicious tea blend, this offering is something of a mystery. Within a couple months after I ordered it last year, Maple Toffee disappeared from the Murchie's website, and hasn't returned in over a year. It's either seasonal, sold out or discontinued. I don't know which, but sadly, am starting to su...

Ginger Peach from Teavana
Style: Flavored Green Tea – Region: Blend45 / 100 Aroma: 6/10 Flavor: 2/5 Value: 2/5
Nov. 30th, 2024
Going off the price listed on Amazon ($15/24-ct box as of this writing), this tea is not worth the trouble. After tasting it, I'm not sure I'll even try it for "free" again at a conference or hotel.
This is supposed to be a ginger- and peach-flavored green tea, which sounds like a good combination, and somewhat sm...

Harmonic Mint from Teavana
Style: Mint Tea – Region: Blend58 / 100 Aroma: 6/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 2/5
Nov. 21st, 2024
Teavana takes a blend of spearmint and peppermint, dashes in a dollop of lemon verbena, and offers it now in teabags. Given the apparently identical ingredients, I strongly suspect this is a renaming or reincarnation of the former "Mint Majesty Full Leaf Tea Sachets" rated here seven years ago by Bob Downs. It gave o...

Baker Street Blend from Murchie's Tea & Coffee Ltd
Style: Green and Black Tea Blend – Region: Blend62 / 100 Aroma: 5/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 4/5
Nov. 17th, 2024
This is such a daring mix of different tea types that it's hard to believe the blend is over 100 years old, instead of a seasonal or experimental offering. Baker Street (per Murchie's website) is the same as their popular and longstanding No. 10 Blend, but with one tea added: Lapsang Souchong. So in total, the blend...

English Breakfast (tea bags) from Teavana
Style: English Breakfast – Region: Blend75 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 3/5
Nov. 12th, 2024
Another bagged offering arrives from Teavana's latest comeback push, which finds its teas (including this one) in late 2024 in online stores like Wal-Mart, Target, Amazon, and even Staples (where the price was lowest as of this writing, but still around $12 for a 24-ct box).
I used an average of the retail prices ...

Coronation Blend from Murchie's Tea & Coffee Ltd
Style: Black Tea – Region: Blend84 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 4/5
Nov. 9th, 2024
Here's the latest in a long line of Murchie's teas commemorating assorted milestones in the modern history of the British royal family—in this case, the ascension of Charles to the throne. Is this a tea worthy of a king? While not their best such black-tea blend, I'd wager His Highness would be satisfied to drink t...

Throat Cooler from Celestial Seasonings
Style: Wellness Tea / Medicinal Tea – Region: Blend72 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 4/5
Sep. 5th, 2024
Though labeled on the box as "herbal tea", Throat Cooler shares many of the ingredients of medicinal teas. The full list (Peppermint, Spearmint, Lemongrass, Chamomile, Eucalyptus, Licorice Root, Natural Menthol Flavor with Other Natural Flavors, Slippery Elm) is shorter than most Traditional Medicinal and Yogi teas, o...

Earl Grey from Benner Tea Co
Style: Earl Grey Tea – Region: Blend72 / 100 Aroma: 6/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 5/5
Aug. 30th, 2024
Benner Earl Grey (from ALDI food stores) came across much the opposite to me, on first try, as to the other reviewer: weak on bergamot and OK on tea. In fact, when opening the paper wrapper for each bag and taking a good sniff, I hardly could detect the bergamot, but the tea was obvious in the dry aroma. The bergamo...

Sleepytime Lavender from Celestial Seasonings
Style: Herbal Tea – Region: Blend73 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 4/5
Aug. 9th, 2024
True story: I actually grabbed this somewhat absentmindedly off the shelf at Sprouts thinking it was True Blueberry (almost identical color scheme and basic design!), then only noticed the different name and cartoon when placing the box on the checkout belt. "Well, what the heck, I'm not a big fan of lavender as a tas...

Original (Black Tea) from Red Rose Tea
Style: Black Tea – Region: Blend59 / 100 Aroma: 4/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 4/5
Jun. 27th, 2024
Seldom have I sampled a tea with such a gap between aroma (or lack thereof) and taste. It's a vast chasm, really. The Grand Canyon might be a good analog with another several million years of erosion, widening and deepening.
This was a motel pickup somewhere out on the Great Plains. I don't recall where. I had a...

Pomegranate from Farmer Brothers
Style: Fruit (Herbal) Tea – Region: Blend68 / 100 Aroma: 6/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 4/5
Jun. 18th, 2024
As with most Farmer Brothers teas, I got this at a motel. Some motels have nice management who offers tea, and a most-welcomed minority of them offer more than only straight Lipton, or than the cheapest possible store brand like Great Value. When they do, and it's reasonably good, I try to commend the staff directly ...

Orange Flavored Jasmine Green Tea from Rituals
Style: Flavored Green Tea – Region: Blend73 / 100 Aroma: 6/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 4/5
Jun. 6th, 2024
This peculiar combination came from a Days Inn in Hays, KS, and tasted really nice on their water, so I brought a bag home to try as well. Rituals Teas in general seem to perform above most food-service offerings, and this was no exception.
The type made me curious, because I've never seen orange and jasmine paired...

Parlour Room Blend from Murchie's Tea & Coffee Ltd
Style: Flavored Black Tea – Region: Blend59 / 100 Aroma: 6/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 4/5
Mar. 13th, 2024
This is one of those uncommon tea blends that smells and tastes exactly as advertised—no hidden "flavours" (as it's spelled where sold), no surprises, no Trojan horses. That's a good thing, if you like a smoky rose tea with some fruity elements. Murchie's describes this as, "Evoking the atmosphere of a Victorian si...

Darling Grey (Teabags) from Whittard of Chelsea
Style: Earl Grey Tea – Region: Blend85 / 100 Aroma: 9/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 4/5
Feb. 24th, 2024
Given how much of a waste of time and steeping water Whittard's standard Earl Grey was, expectations for this version ran low. What a pleasant surprise instead!
Not only did this tea actually have a detectable and pleasant aroma upon opening the wrapper and sniffing the dry bag, that carried over quite strongly i...

Teepee Dreams from Native American Tea Company
Style: Wellness Tea / Medicinal Tea – Region: Blend61 / 100 Aroma: 6/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 2/5
Feb. 21st, 2024
Here's another box of this brand that I got overpriced at a Black Hills souvenir store. Like the others, the bags are both small and underfilled, docking the "value" category, despite this being a decent-tasting blend.
The dry-bag aroma came across as a disjointed melange of a lot of stuff, much akin to the "unde...

Festive Breakfast (Teabags) from Whittard of Chelsea
Style: English Breakfast – Region: Blend74 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 4/5
Feb. 4th, 2024
Whittard has a single-sourced English Breakfast by name (from West Java), and an entirely different tea more of the traditional EB style—this one—composed of Ceylon and Kenya teas. Unlike the named EB, I couldn't find Festive Breakfast on Whittard's website, but instead, got it as part of a gift assortment.

English Rose (Teabags) from Whittard of Chelsea
Style: Rose Black Tea – Region: Blend71 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 3/5
Jan. 10th, 2024
Two background caveats here:
1. I'm not a big fan of overt rose scent in beverages; something about drinking common garden flowers that I've cultivated, like rose, marigold or lavender, still seems weird to me (even though I do like jasmine tea...go figure!).
2. I haven't had rose congou tea from China yet, for com...
