Hao-Ya 'B' Superfine Keemun from Upton Tea Imports
Style: Keemun Hao Ya B – Region: China93 / 100 Aroma: 9/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 4/5
Jan. 7th, 2013
This is the only Keemun I've ever tried that didn't smell like perfume. It's got a natural but slight sweetness to it, but it's not overwhelming. Honestly, the only reason I haven't ordered giant tins of this stuff is because it's quite pricey. Well worth it as a once in a while treat, though!

Oh, this is wonderful tea. It's got the maltiness of the Assam but has that slight peppery aftertaste from the Yunnan... I'm starting to think Upton does the best breakfast blends in the business.

Sep. 23rd, 2012
Color me spoiled, addicted, imprinted like a baby duck. This was the first single estate Darjeeling I ever sampled and nothing else has ever come close to the golden Muscatel notes (the very apotheosis of the trait), and summery, so-second-flush hints of dark dried fruits, nuts and spice with just the right touch of wo...

Complex and smooth, a bit on the weaker side though. Dry leaf has a strong aroma, characteristic of Yunnan red teas.
Aroma is complex. Moderately smoky, resembling tobacco smoke and smoky green teas (like gunpowder) more than most smoky black teas, also moderately fruity, almost like a Keemun. Flavor unusually sm...
Arya Estate Ruby Organic (EX-17) from Upton Tea Imports
Style: Darjeeling Black Tea – Region: Darjeeling, India83 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 4/5
Mar. 28th, 2012
This is without a doubt one of the best teas I've had. It is just an extremely satisfying tea. I have finally noticed that when I really like a Darjeeling, no matter what flush it is, it comes from Arya Estate. It has been a while since I had this, as I ran out and am waiting for this year's to come in. Therefore,...

This tea has a very intense aroma. The flavor is pretty smooth, and a lot like black teas. I like that it's not as vegetal-tasting as most green teas. It still has a vegetal aroma, though. I like the roasted flavor. I added cream and sugar.

This is the first example of Tai Ping Hou Kui that I've sampled, so I didn't really know what to expect. I was disappointed.
This tea was slow to infuse. I wish I had had more of the sample to experiment with; I only had enough for two western-style brewings, both of which I steeped twice, using Upton's 3-minute r...

Style: Hojicha – Region: China87 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 5/5

I normally think of Chinese versions of Japanese styles of tea as imitations, lower in price and quality than their "original" counterparts. But I liked this one very much, in fact, much more than the considerably pricier TJ41 (which Upton has since discontinued), and TJ40. It immediately became my new favorite hojic...

This is a nice light chocolate tea. There is a slight taste of cinnamon and a tiny after taste of cardamom. The cocoa is not overwhelming, I find the aroma and flavor to be light, but jut enough to enjoy.

Darjeeling first Flush Puttabong Estate- When infused, the saddle brown leaves give off a pleasing aroma of fruit and wintergreen. The flavor is rich and balanced with fruit notes that linger in the finish. I will give 74 /100. Almost an Oolong type.

Steeping 5 minutes results in nutty and fruity flavour that is long lasting. The tea leaves are fine rolled with a beautiful golden amber liquor and it is more complete in second cup. The tea is little sweet in between and plane at the back. This tea is medium as compared to other darjeeling FTGFOP1 grade or other spec...

This clonal, classic, superfine, muscatel tea is an outstanding Darjeeling. I steeped the The Tea for 5 minutes in a temperature of 195 degree celsius. The Tea can be drink without milk. This is a Ceylon whose character is somewhat in between the high-grown, lighter Ceylon black teas and the richer, maltier ones. Strong but smooth, with tones of rice, wintergreen, and malt. Very rich red-brown color.
Although this tea is initially quite smooth, the aftertaste is rather tannic: bitter and astringen...

This tea was barely like other gunpowder green tea, and much more like other high-grade Chinese green teas. The loose leaf is only loosely rolled, and looks quite delicate.
Aroma is vegetal and light, and suggests sweetness. There's no overt smokiness but there's a suggestion of camphor in the aroma, which I disli...

Lately I've been on a roll, sampling a variety of black teas that continue to be completely unlike any I have had before, and I never cease to be amazed at how diverse they can be. This is yet another black tea that was vastly different.

I was solidly disappointed with this one. Upton's offerings of Japanese styles of tea produced in Japan have been hit-or-miss for me; this and their Sencha were pretty poor, but their Chinese Gyokuro (ZG81) was a pleasant surprise.
Fairly twiggy, mostly stem. Too much astringency and sourness for me. I tried usin...

Dry leaf consists of large pieces of broken leaf, mostly light brown, with some greenish and silvery.
Strongly reminiscent of a Darjeeling, and with a typical, middle-of-the-road Darjeeling character. Aroma is bright, fruity, and light, with a lot of the muscatel grape quality. There's also a hint of spruce needle...
