Koslanda Estate OP from Upton Tea Imports
Style: Ceylon Black Tea – Region: Uva, Sri Lanka63 / 100 Aroma: 6/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 4/5
Apr. 26th, 2010
Upton suggests that this tea has "raisin like nuances" and I'd go even father and be more direct: it smells and tastes a like raisins, and leaves an aftertaste of raisins! Smooth but without being weak. A fair amount of the rice-like quality that I find in many Ceylon teas, and almost a hint of wintergreen. Medium-b...

Style: Hojicha – Region: Japan77 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 4/5
Apr. 23rd, 2010
Aroma powerful and enticing like a dark roast coffee. This tea foams when brewed, and the brewed cup is clearer and lighter in color than you'd expect from the aroma and dark color of the twigs. Unlike some kukicha, this tea seems to be made exclusively out of twigs with not even a bit of leaf.
Surprisingly, relat...

Very pleasant and stands up to milk and sugar.

This makes a pleasant cup, and Upton's Season's Picks are a great value.

Style: Jasmine Tea – Region: China47 / 100 Aroma: 4/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 2/5
Apr. 20th, 2010
Very strongly aromatic...aroma is sweet, very floral but less perfumey than some Jasmines. There's almost a hint of wintergreen in the aroma. It's also fairly vegetal and a bit fishy. The aroma strikes me as a bit strange and has some unpleasant characteristics to it.
Very smooth flavor, sweet, with absolutely no...
Hibiscus Flowers, Coarse Cut from Upton Tea Imports
Style: Hibiscus Tea – Region: Nigeria50 / 100 Aroma: 4/10 Flavor: 2/5 Value: 3/5
Apr. 12th, 2010
I'm not a huge fan of hibiscus, so it's hard for me to rate this. Compared to tea and most herbal teas, I don't like it much, but that doesn't mean this isn't of good quality.
Cup is an intense opaque red like the color of 100% cranberry juice. Aroma is mostly of cooked fruit, like the intermediate stage in making...
Organic Ho-ji Cha Kamakura from Upton Tea Imports
Style: Hojicha – Region: Kanagawa, Japan67 / 100 Aroma: 6/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 3/5
Apr. 9th, 2010
It has a pleasant taste and is not overly caffeinated.

Style: Shui Hsien Oolong – Region: Fujian, China80 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 5/5
Apr. 9th, 2010
While I'm not normally a fan of "fake" teas, I'm eager to try ones that are honestly presented as imitating styles originating in other regions.
Aroma is very toasty, more like roasted Yerba Mate than other roasted teas. Nutty and earthy, with a sweet aftertaste that lingers. There is actually a lot of complexity ...
Pai Mu Tan Imperial from Upton Tea Imports
Style: White Peony Tea – Region: China47 / 100 Aroma: 5/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 2/5
Apr. 6th, 2010
A darker white tea. This doesn't even resemble ZW56, Upton's other organic Pai Mu Tan offering. Much darker; if you just gave it to me I'd probably guess incorrectly that it was a Shou Mei.
Aroma is mostly of autumn leaves, with only a hint of peony and a faint suggestion of some other vegetal tones. Also, unusua...
Osmanthus Oolong Se Chung from Upton Tea Imports
Style: Osmanthus Tea – Region: China93 / 100 Aroma: 9/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 5/5
Mar. 29th, 2010
I love this tea. Se Chung is absolutely my favorite style of oolong, and my favorite Se Chung is Upton's ZO10, so I was eagerly anticipating this one, and I was pleased to find a rich, complex tea that added a completely new element to the mix. I can't say whether I prefer this or the unscented tea more. They're ver...

Style: Ceylon Black Tea – Region: Uva, Sri Lanka63 / 100 Aroma: 6/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 3/5
Mar. 25th, 2010
A solid, if somewhat generic black tea that is dark and full-bodied but tends on the mellow side of flavor.
The aroma is typical for a Ceylon black tea, and has only mild nuances of dried fruit and nut (like Upton suggests). I'm not really feeling the "citrus notes" but I do notice a sweet aftertaste. There's much...
Huo Shan Yellow Buds from Upton Tea Imports
Style: Huangya – Region: Huoshan, Anhui, China63 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 2/5 Value: 2/5
Mar. 23rd, 2010
This is the first yellow tea I've sampled and in many respects it resembles a green tea.
The aroma is fairly rich; there are some of the grassy tones that characterize many green teas, but these are weak and in the background. A bit peppery like Upton describes, and also a bit perfumey. Subtle, but with a lot of d...
Holy Basil Purple Leaf from Upton Tea Imports
Style: Tulsi / Holy Basil – Region: India87 / 100 Aroma: 6/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 5/5

This is a very calming tea. Much more effective than chamomile. Over the years, this has become my favorite tea. Ever.

Style: Tie Guan Yin – Region: China67 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 4/5
Mar. 16th, 2010
The tightly curled brown leaves unfurl only partially when brewing...producing a tea that's completely clear and golden in color.
Complex aroma, strongly suggesting apricot, and also having some skunky tones, and a hint of olive. Smooth, mellow flavor, contrasting with the aroma, which suggests a sharper tea. No as...
Floral Tie-Guan-Yin Superior Grade from Upton Tea Imports
Style: Tie Guan Yin – Region: China73 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 3/5
Mar. 15th, 2010
Aroma very much like a Dong Ding Jade Oolong, very floral, but with a faint hint of a woody quality absent from those teas; this tea tastes very slightly more oxidized. Very smooth, but leaving a tingling sensation in the mouth. The aroma is very pleasing, but not terribly complex.
Using Upton's instructions I bre...
Formosa Oolong Extra Fancy from Upton Tea Imports
Style: Oolong Tea – Region: Taiwan / Formosa67 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 3/5
Mar. 12th, 2010
When I bought this tea it was the second-highest-priced grade of the standard "Formosa oolongs" in Upton's catalogue. They've since switched things around and discontinued this tea.
I found this tea, moving up from the lowest grades (TT11-TT17), to be the first one that offered an appreciable difference, the first ...
Tie-Guan-Yin Oolong 2nd Grade from Upton Tea Imports
Style: Tie Guan Yin – Region: China67 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 3/5
Mar. 11th, 2010
Aroma is subtle and complex, but on the weak side: mostly of peach, with some weaker earthy tones. Flavor is tangy, with little bitterness. The aftertaste has a mild astringency. Thin-bodied.
Following Upton's recommendations I found worked alright--for a first cup. However, I tried to brew a second cup and ther...
Oolong Choicest Grade from Upton Tea Imports
Style: Oolong Tea – Region: Taiwan / Formosa50 / 100 Aroma: 5/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 2/5
Mar. 10th, 2010
Upton offers a number of different grades of Formosa oolong with only moderate differences in price...this one, by weight, costs less than 50% more than TT11, the "standard grade". Again, the leaf is broken, but in larger pieces than some of the lower grades. The dry leaf has a weak, earthy aroma.
The brewed tea i...
Shan Tuyet Snow Green from Upton Tea Imports
Style: Green Tea – Region: Vietnam77 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 5/5
Mar. 9th, 2010
Brews a rich golden color. The aroma of this tea is more similar to a dragonwell tea than any other green tea I've tried, but the overall experience of drinking it is very different. Very aromatic, with a slightly toasty aroma. The flavor is muted and the tea has a cooler quality than dragonwell, with a hint of smok...

Style: Green Tea – Region: Wuyuan, Jiangxi, China83 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 5/5
Mar. 7th, 2010
Upton seems to excel at inexpensive, organic Chinese green teas, and this one is no exception. The thin, wiry leaves have an interesting appearance both before and after brewing.
Aroma is very grassy and a little bit vegetal, with some dark floral tones almost more suggestive of a black tea. Grassier, sweeter, and...
Organic Imperial Bai Hao Oolong from Upton Tea Imports
Style: Oriental Beauty – Region: China47 / 100 Aroma: 4/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 2/5
Mar. 4th, 2010
I found this tea to be weak in aroma and flavor. The aroma is slightly earthy but lighter than typical for a bai hao oolong, with light floral and vegetal tones, a hint of spice, and a suggestion of fruitiness. I think it's a stretch to call the aroma "complex" because it's so weak. The color of the cup is surprisin...

Style: Chun Mee – Region: China80 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 5/5
Mar. 2nd, 2010
This tea got my attention with the first sip--another chun mee of unusual quality, like rodents of unusual size. Similar to ZG42 (Chun mee dao ming) in how inexpensive it is relative to its quality, but very different in character.
The aroma is very complex: significantly grassier than any other Chun Mee I've tried...
Green Pu-Erh Tuo Cha from Upton Tea Imports
Style: Raw (Sheng) Pu-erh – Region: Yunnan, China80 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 5/5
Mar. 1st, 2010
Very smoky, but in an exceedingly mellow way, totally unlike gunpowder or lapsang souchong. This tea has a remarkable smoothness to it, unlike any other green tea I've tried, and if it weren't for the smokiness I'd be tempted to describe it as creamy. Cool and clean tasting, yet without bitterness. Full-bodied, and ...

Style: Jade Oolong – Region: Taiwan / Formosa57 / 100 Aroma: 6/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 2/5

Extremely mellow...the aroma is more like that of a floral honey than other teas. Light in color. Sweet, with almost no bitterness, sourness, or astringency. Compared to other Tung Tings I've tried, this tea is less like other oolongs and more like a Pouchong. In my opinion, it's too thin, and it has a bit of a fis...

Style: Oolong Tea – Region: Taiwan / Formosa57 / 100 Aroma: 6/10 Flavor: 2/5 Value: 3/5
Feb. 28th, 2010
This tea is one step up (in price and presumably quality) from TT11. It lives up to my expectations. Surprisingly, however, the leaves are more finely broken in this tea. Visually, I'd expect this to be the lower grade tea, but actually brewing the two teas demonstrates otherwise.
I find this tea to have signific...
