Orange & Cinnamon Spice from Twinings

Style: Herbal Tea – Region: Blend

30 / 100 Aroma: 2/10 Flavor: 2/5 Value: 1/5
Jun. 29th, 2013

This tea has a strong aroma of orange, but the aroma seems artificial...a little like orange-flavored popsickles, orange starburst, Sunny D, or any number of artificial orange-flavored things.

I found this tea also left a tingly sensation on my palate...similar to blends including clove. I didn't taste much clove i...

Verbena from Ronnefeldt

Style: Lemon Verbena – Region: ?????

67 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 3/5
Jun. 7th, 2013

I love lemon verbena...this was pleasant, but pales in comparison to the whole-leaf herb or even broken-leaf variants.

Moderately lemony, light-bodied for lemon verbena. Flavor mild, pleasing. Dusty finish.

Not as smooth as the whole-leaf herb I've brewed, but not as astringent as some finely-broken herbs that ...

Bulk Lemon Balm, Cut & Sifted, Organic from Frontier

Style: Lemon Balm – Region: United States of America

70 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 3/5
May. 25th, 2013

I'm used to drinking iced herbal tea brewed from fresh lemon balm, or from my own dried batches of the herb, which I dry in whole-leaf form. This herb was pretty finely broken, and had a pretty different flavor and aroma.

The aroma is only very mildly lemony, much less so than my own batches of the herb, but it's v...

Calm Chamomile Full Leaf from Tazo Tea

Style: Chamomile Blend – Region: Blend

80 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 4/5
May. 22nd, 2013

Before Tazo switched to what they call whole leaf sachets, this was one of my favorite of their blends. It remains so, and I definitely think it is improved, although not as much as some of them.

Like the original tea bag, I find this has just the right amount of chamomile for me--enough that I notice it but not en...

Pomegranate & Raspberry from Twinings

Style: Fruit (Herbal) Tea – Region: Blend

53 / 100 Aroma: 4/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 3/5
Apr. 26th, 2013

I enjoyed this blend much more than I thought I would, and much more than typical for a fruity herbal blend in a tea bag. It's very light and pleasant.

Brews a cup with a pale pink color and a very fruity aroma that I find cloying.

In spite of the off-putting aroma, the flavor is much more subdued and pleasant, ...

Nightly Calm (Bedtime Blend) from Twinings

Style: Herbal Tea – Region: Blend

47 / 100 Aroma: 5/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 3/5
Apr. 19th, 2013

This tastes a lot like a knock-off of Celestial Seasonings Sleepytime. I love the combination of spearmint and chamomile. It's very good...but I don't like the fact that it's so unoriginal.

The dominant aroma is of spearmint and chamomile...I don't notice either of the lemony herbs very much.

I think Twinings g...

Tangerine Ginger from Rishi Tea

Style: Herbal Tea – Region: Blend

53 / 100 Aroma: 5/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 3/5
Apr. 15th, 2013

Very gingery, especially in the finish. Sour, and suggesting of sweetness but without actually being sweet. Oddly similar to fruit juice.

I found this blend interesting to try, but it was not the sort of thing I would like to drink on a regular basis because it was too sour for me. It is quite complex, however, b...

Love from Pukka

Style: Herbal Tea – Region: Blend

73 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 4/5
Mar. 15th, 2013

Although chamomile is the dominant and defining herb in this blend, I like it much more than straight chamomile tea.

Brews a rich golden color. Aroma is highly floral, but not in a fleeting or cloying way. Reminiscent more of flowers in a meadow on a dry summer day, and quite different from the intoxicating fragra...

Zingiber Ginger Coconut Rooibos Tea from Teavana

Style: Flavored Rooibos – Region: Blend

53 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 2/5
Mar. 12th, 2013

I'm normally not a fan of coconut-flavored teas, but the coconut in this blend is very subdued, and the dominant tones are rooibos and spice.

I notice that the ingredient list contains both sugar and artificial flavoring, both of which I'm not a huge fan of, but this blend is barely sweet, and it did not have much o...

Rooibos Chai (Formerly Ruby Chai) from Numi Organic Tea

Style: Rooibos Chai / Spiced Rooibos – Region: Blend

57 / 100 Aroma: 5/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 3/5
Mar. 2nd, 2013

A good caffeine-free 'chai' which is completely dominated by clove, for better or for worse.

This tea had a rich, cloudy red color, much lighter red than most rooibos, suggesting that this blend actually does not contain a majority of rooibos.

The aroma is dominated by clove, and nutmeg, allspice, and cinnamon ar...

Sunset in Seattle from Market Spice

Style: Herbal Tea – Region: Blend

53 / 100 Aroma: 5/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 3/5
Feb. 12th, 2013

This herbal blend had a strong aroma suggestive of a burned candle, like the smell of smoke that comes off a candle after blowing it out. The aroma is woody and bark-like, and the vanilla and anise are both strongly evident.

I am really not sure how I feel about this one. It was odd. Not bad, but certainly not wh...

Berry Rooibos from Epi Tea

Style: Fruit Rooibos – Region: ?????

60 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 2/5
Jan. 3rd, 2013

A pleasant, creamy and smooth berry-flavored herbal blend.

I thought this was a very balanced blend, but it was on the weak side. I think Epi Tea could get away with using about twice as much leaf.

Thankfully, this wasn't too sour. A lot of berry blends that go heavy on the hibiscus taste too sour to me. This ...

Foxtrot from Adagio Teas

Style: Chamomile Blend – Region: Blend

67 / 100 Aroma: 6/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 4/5
Dec. 21st, 2012

This was a rather novel herbal blend, different from anything else I've tried.

The aroma is predominately chamomile. I can't notice the rooibos at all in the aroma, although it seems to impart a reddish color to the brew. The peppermint is definitely noticeable, but seems more to impart a creamy quality than the t...

Chopra Center Organic Ginger from Harney and Sons

Style: Herbal Tea – Region: Blend

67 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 2/5
Dec. 20th, 2012

This is a lemon-ginger blend that is stronger on the ginger than the lemon, and with a dash of pepper. The ginger is almost fiery but somehow soothing; I like it very much. Flavor is somewhat tangy.

I thought this was a very high-quality blend, but according to the Harney and Sons website, it seems to only be avai...

Peppermint from Adagio Teas

Style: Peppermint Tea – Region: ?????

63 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 3/5
Nov. 25th, 2012

This was among the highest-quality of the commercial pure peppermint herbal teas that I've sampled, from a tea company. Quality-wise, it is about on par with Two Leaves and a Bud's, but the price point is markedly lower. It still pales in comparison with the stuff I've grown in my own garden.

Aroma is strongly pep...

Blueberry Rooibos from Rishi Tea

Style: Fruit Rooibos – Region: Blend

60 / 100 Aroma: 6/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 3/5
Nov. 19th, 2012

Dry leaf has an intensely fruity aroma; aroma of the brewed cup is a bit more subdued. Flavor is moderately sour and slightly sweet, a little suggestive of unsweetened cranberry juice, and faintly suggestive of spiced cider.

I tend not to like predominately fruity blends like this, and I found this quite drinkable ...

Peppermint Rooibos from Rishi Tea

Style: Flavored Rooibos – Region: Blend

73 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 4/5
Nov. 5th, 2012

This blend is called "peppermint rooibos", but it contains a significant amount of bergamot oil, which imparts a noticeable Earl-Greyish quality to it.

The peppermint is creamy, suggesting vanilla or peppermint chocolate.

Warming quality overall, which is unusual given how peppermint usually makes a blend very fr...

Oct. 30th, 2012

I normally like straight rooibos and am less into flavored rooibos, but I think Rooibos and Vanilla blend very well.

This particular blend has a pleasing oatmeal-like quality. Rich and creamy. Full-bodied.

I drank it straight but I can imagine this would be good with milk or cream as well.

Very pleasing!

This blend was a lot like a lemon-ginger blend with added depth from the turmeric. I liked it much better than any straight lemon-ginger herbal blend, though. I find this blend had just the right amount of each ingredient.

The flavor is tangy but without being overly sour. Mouthfeel is peppery, ...

Blood Orange Rooibos from Epi Tea

Style: Fruit Rooibos – Region: Blend

60 / 100 Aroma: 6/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 2/5
Aug. 2nd, 2012

Blood Oranges are one of my two favorite fruits, and I was looking forward to this rooibos. Unfortunately, I don't really notice the distinction between this and a regular orange-flavored rooibos; the blood orange may be more a reference to the deep, blood-like color of the rooibos than to the flavoring.

Brewed as ...

Jul. 18th, 2012

I tend to not like hibiscus tea hot, but I do enjoy it as an iced drink on very hot days. To this end I like to brew it very weakly. It can be quite refreshing, if you want a fruit-like drink that does not contain any sugar or sweetness.

I thought this particular batch was quite good, and very reasonably priced fo...

Peppermint Herbal Tea from Bigelow Tea

Style: Peppermint Tea – Region: ?????

Jul. 16th, 2012

I find it interesting that Bigelow offers both this pure peppermint herbal tea, and the mint medley blend. The mint medley is more widely available and I prefer it, because I like spearmint more than peppermint in herbal teas. Both I think are quite good.

There are aspects of this pure peppermint tea that I like b...

Green Rooibos (Rooibos, Green Tea) from Mountain Rose Herbs

Style: Green Rooibos – Region: South Africa

92 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 5/5
Jun. 25th, 2012

Upon sampling the green rooibos from Mountain Rose Herbs, this became a new favorite for me, and my new preferred source of green rooibos.

Although the dry leaf is light green in color, I found that the flavor of this was more similar to red rooibos than other green rooibos samples. Brews a light orange color.

Jun. 24th, 2012

A strong, Assam-like rooibos, if that's possible. Dry leaf is pleasingly aromatic.

Aroma is rather strong, earthy, and woody, and considerably more peppery and spicy than I am used to for rooibos, less fruity. Rather heavy and thick. Not exactly bitter, but seems to have more bite than a typical rooibos. This is...

Rose Petals from Shanti Tea

Style: Herbal Tea – Region: India

80 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 4/5
Jun. 1st, 2012

I love rose petals, both for brewing as an herbal tea on their own, and for blending with both green and black teas. Brewed on their own they produce a surprisingly strong cup with a reddish color, pleasing rose aroma, and strong flavor. The aroma is very different from most of the light, airy floral aromas, and more...
