Formosa Super Fancy Black Dragon (o) from De Theefabriek
Style: Oolong Tea – Region: Taiwan / Formosa54 / 100 Aroma: 5/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 3/5
Aug. 12th, 2018
Dark liquor, resteeps well, up to 4-5 times.
The first sip always mildly surprises me with its sweetness. It has a very mineral taste and there's a hint of smoke. I can kind of taste the advertised fruitiness in it if I concentrate, but that's not a descriptor that would have come to my mind.
I'm not generally a fa...
Kokeicha (g) from De Theefabriek
Style: Kokeicha – Region: Japan53 / 100 Aroma: 5/10 Flavor: 2/5 Value: 3/5
Jul. 3rd, 2018
I have no idea if I'm doing this right; I may update my review if there are any developments.
The loose tea is visually very interesting. Small dark green "sprinkles" that I believe I'm supposed to put directly into the cup and add hot water. They partly dissolve, making the liquid a lovely murky swamp green.
I am ...
Java Sunda Purwa (g) from De Theefabriek
Style: Gunpowder Green Tea – Region: West Java, Indonesia48 / 100 Aroma: 5/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 3/5
Dec. 16th, 2017
The first thing that struck me is that it looks and smells exactly like gunpowder tea, even though it isn't called that anywhere. It's not a problem, I even have an idea why one might not want to market gunpowder tea as gunpowder tea (if that really is what this is). The origin and a name might sound more enticing that...

Style: Black Tea – Region: Turkey56 / 100 Aroma: 6/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 4/5
Oct. 31st, 2017
This is interesting. This tea, which shouldn't be flavoured in any way, smells and tastes like forest fruit flavoured black tea. Here I was worried that I'd kept it too close to a package of lapsang souchong - the outside of this bag smells like smoke now and it isn't airtight - but I don't really taste any smokiness.

Black Gunpowder (z) from De Theefabriek
Style: Black Gunpowder – Region: Fujian, China57 / 100 Aroma: 5/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 4/5
Oct. 19th, 2017
The dry leaves are a lovely dull brown colour. I just really like the look of them.
I'm having slightly mixed feelings. It is flowery as advertised, but it's also a bit "dull" in a way that cheap teabags often are. Maybe I used too much tea or let it steep for too long. Or maybe too many leaves and not steeped long ...
Jinxuan (o) from De Theefabriek
Style: Jade Oolong – Region: Thailand71 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 4/5
Oct. 17th, 2017
I'm still struggling with tightly-rolled green oolongs, but when I do get this one right, it tastes amazing. It's extremely smooth and slightly sweetish. It has just a hint of something that reminds me of green tea. It's silky soft and a bit sweet when I get it right, but sour if I do it wrong (for example, if I use to...

Style: Ripened (Shou) Pu-erh – Region: Yunnan, China65 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 4/5
Sep. 21st, 2017
I would love to try sheng pu-erh since that seems to be so highly regarded, but I haven't been able to find any. Wanting that, I was also interested in compressed pu-erh of any kind, and De Theefabriek has these little "nests" of shou pu-erh.
They are individually wrapped in paper in the package, but I was hit by th...
Sencha (g/bio) from De Theefabriek
Style: Sencha – Region: Japan65 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 2/5
Sep. 16th, 2017
This is how I remember sencha! Very strong green vegetal aroma and a seaweed-y flavour. It has a thick mouthfeel and the colour is light greenish yellow. The way I made it now, it didn't taste bitter like other senchas have before, which is a shame because I quite liked that bitterness and I feel that would really comp...

Style: Sencha – Region: Kenya34 / 100 Aroma: 3/10 Flavor: 2/5 Value: 2/5
Sep. 13th, 2017
The leaves look interesting: the leaves are shredded into flat pieces of two or three square millimeters and relatively light green. (Isn't sencha usually needle-shaped?)
I don't have much experience with senchas, but this doesn't quite seem like the two better ones. I remember a strong bright, "green" vegetal aroma...
Tien Kuan Yin (o) from De Theefabriek
Style: Tie Guan Yin – Region: Fujian, China62 / 100 Aroma: 6/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 4/5
Sep. 12th, 2017
I just find oolongs really difficult. I have three tightly rolled oolongs, including this one, and they taste almost identical to me. I feel like I'm giving ratings almost at random sometimes.
I know I used a very large amount of leaves this time. It has a soapy flavour (not in an unpleasant way) like jade oolongs, ...
Yunnan (Green) from De Theefabriek
Style: Green Tea – Region: Yunnan, China81 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 4/5
Sep. 2nd, 2017
Even before I brewed this, the colour of the leaves reminded me of Vietnamese green teas: olive green with some grey and white leaves. The aroma and the colour of the liqueur also reminded me of Vietnamese green teas.
The aroma and flavour made me think of Simon Lévelt's Yen Bai Groen and a brandless tea called Vietn...
Jasmijn from De Theefabriek
Style: Jasmine Tea – Region: China63 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 3/5
Aug. 25th, 2017
I actually ordered the slightly more expensive and higher quality Jasmijn Mao Jian instead of this one. I'm going to give De Theefabriek the benefit of doubt and put it down to a mistake. Given how many samples I ordered, any small mistakes like this are understandable.
The jasmine smell struck me as a bit sharp at ...
Mao Feng from De Theefabriek
Style: Mao Feng Green Tea – Region: Zhejiang, China66 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 3/5
Jul. 12th, 2017
I might still have to work out some things with brewing this tea, because this second attempt tastes very different from the first.
It has a strong vegetal aroma and very little sweetness. It reminds me a little bit of Young Hyson right now which seems strange. After all, this tea is supposed to be mild whereas Youn...
Choui Fong from De Theefabriek
Style: Green Tea – Region: Thailand64 / 100 Aroma: 6/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 3/5
Jul. 10th, 2017
The leaves are extremely large and irregular, so much so that they don't even fit in my regular strainer.
Fun fact that I just learned: All images of teas on De Theefabriek's product pages are in exactly the same scale, and are 5 x 5 cm squares in real life. This helps give a sense of the size of the leaves.
The te...
Four Seasons from De Theefabriek
Style: Four Seasons Oolong – Region: Vietnam78 / 100 Aroma: 9/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 4/5
Jul. 10th, 2017
I wanted to try this tea because De Theefabriek's other Vietnamese teas have been absolutely amazing.
The dry tea doesn't have a very strong aroma, but it's very sweet and almost reminds of some candy mix.
Both the aroma and the flavour of the tea remind me of Het Gouden Randje's Formosa Jade Oolong. I'm still stru...
Tian Mu from De Theefabriek
Style: Green Tea – Region: Zhejiang, China63 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 3/5
Jul. 9th, 2017
It's a lovely summer day, so I cycled the 26 kilometres to De Theefabriek again. This time I didn't even visit the tea museum (which I've already seen twice), just bought teas and drank a cup of Tian Mu in the tearoom.
I feel like they always give water at 100°C and many more leaves than I'd use myself, so I only l...
Lung Ching from De Theefabriek
Style: Dragon Well (Long Jing) – Region: Zhejiang, China60 / 100 Aroma: 6/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 3/5
Jun. 13th, 2017
I've seen Dragonwell here and there and I had the general impression that it is a pretty well-known tea with a good reputation, so i wanted to try it. (In fact, one of my proudest tea lover moments was seeing Longjing mentioned in Death's End by Liu Cixin and knowing what that is - and actually having some myself.)

Pin Ho Jade from De Theefabriek
Style: Green Tea – Region: Vietnam92 / 100 Aroma: 9/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 3/5
Jun. 7th, 2017
Since I fell in love with Nam Lanh OP from the same brand but I currently prefer green teas, I decided to try this one as it's also from Vietnam.
And I was in luck! It tastes like a green version of the Nam Lanh black tea. It smells the same and, best of all, it's got the same intense "smoldering" flavour.
I drink bo...
Young Hyson from De Theefabriek
Style: Young Hyson – Region: China79 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 3/5
Jun. 7th, 2017
It smells nice enough, but not that special. It tastes great, though. A very strong flavour. If I use too little leaf, it doesn't really have that intensity that I love about this, but if I use too much it easily gets too bitter.
It's a great everyday green tea, but I don't worry too much about running out. I like thi...
Nam Lanh OP from De Theefabriek
Style: Black Tea – Region: Vietnam90 / 100 Aroma: 9/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 4/5
Jun. 6th, 2017
I love this tea. It caught my eye because I'd never had Vietnamese tea before. It turned out to taste amazing. The price is quite decent, too.
I use half a teaspoonful of leaves per cup. It's a bit smokey, but not the way smoked teas are, a little sweet, a little spicy. The best word I can come up with to describe it ...
