Qimen Black Tea from Tea King of China (Starway)

Wonderful example of a Keemun tea! Keemun isn't my favorite type of tea which is why I rated it a bit lower but out of all the ones I've tried this one is my favorite. The aroma is nice and complex and the taste is smooth. The value is amazing too, its really cheap!

The aroma is just a classic bready black tea smell which is very nice however it lacks complexity and was very one-noted. The taste on the other hand was incredibly smooth and was one of the least astringent teas I've ever had (which is a good thing for me). The taste wasn't extremely complex but the flavors it did hav...

I continue to branch out into black teas from provinces other than Yunnan, sold by Yunnan Sourcing. This was a pleasant surprise: an exceptionally smooth tea, easy to brew and easy to drink, among the sweetest Keemuns I've tried.
The dry leaf is very fine and curly, so much it is shaped more like Bi Luo Chun than li...

One-litre pot at home, made from fine very dark brown and black leaves of organic Keemun. Pours nearly clear copper brown (against white china), with no sediment. Clear aroma of black tea leaves, with malty touches. Bitterish flavour of black tea, with leafy and malty notes and touches of smoke. Mildly bitter, leafy af...

This is a well rounded tea - it is mellow and smooth, but has a good amount of earthy flavor too. The aroma is quite pleasant and it is offered at a good price.

This is a pretty mellow but still flavorful Chinese black tea. A little nutty and smoky, and offered at a good price. It has more than a little pipe tobacco flavor to it also. As Alex points out, the aroma is interesting and has some earthy, barnyard notes. I am not always in the mood for a keemun, but this is a goo...

Finally, a good Keemun! The dry tea has an aroma of aged wood, with a smoky scent that's more like the smokiness of a smoked cheese than the harsh smokiness of lower quality Keemun. I brewed it in a French press with water that hadn't reached boiling yet. The brewed tea has a similar aroma to the dry leaves, but this a...

I'm having a hard time rating this tea. It smelled pretty bad to me, like burnt pine. I guess that's the smokiness. The flavor was nicely earthy and slightly chocolaty with the occasional subtle fruit note. I enjoyed the flavor, but hated the aroma. I always knew it was done brewing and would taste the way I liked it w...

Based on my experiences with black gunpowder, I was not surprised that this doesn't taste like Mao Feng at all. It's more like other Chinese black teas I've had. It's got just a tiny little bit of sweetness but it's hardly there. It's pleasantly almost-bitter (but I did make it pretty strong).
Resteeps quite decently...

A very subdued tea. This one was pleasant, but disappointed me, given how much I normally tend to like Keemun.
Dry leaf smells pleasant and mild, a little fresher and cooler-smelling than I normally expect for Keemun.
Brews a rich, dark cup with a mellow flavor and a distinctly caramelly aroma. A little fresher,...

For such a cheap tea it's really good, it's very aromatic and flavorful. It's very interesting and has a lot of character. The smell is kind of a weird burnt smokey smell which I actually really enjoy, and the taste is consistent with that smell. The taste is very smokey and warm and thick so it's a very comforting tea...

Like other Starway teas, this tea is very inexpensive ($6.99 for 6 ounces) and is packaged in a red tin of the same style as other Starway teas. The leaves are broken, but in reasonably large pieces.
The dried leaves are quite pungent and smell strongly of raisins. As the tea steeps, the aroma is of earth, oak leave...

Less than $6 for 2 ounces?...I couldn't resist :)
The tiny curly leaves smell of earth and perhaps a cinnamon sweetness.
I brewed this "semi-western" style (I normally use gong fu style). Using 4 grams of leaf in a 10 ounce teapot.
With this particular setup, my goal is to get two infusions (about 20oz of tea in ...

I have had a lot of Keemun, but never before sampled Hao Ya A. The overall experience of drinking this tea was somewhat different from what I expected. It's similar, but recognizably different from the Hao Ya B, and I'm not convinced that I like it better. I like both, and this one is not that much more expensive (s...

I thought this was an exceptional tea and was my favorite traditional Keemun ever sapmled.
Dry leaf is fine and dark in color, pleasantly aromatic, and the aroma is quite complex, it suggests fruit, spice, and dried flowers, a little like potpourri, with vegetal and chocolatey notes. The smell reminds me of Christm...

I loved this tea. It reminded me a lot of the Spring Keemun from Andrews & Dunham, both in the smell and taste, and the appearance of the leaf.
Mild but pleasant smell to the dry leaf, which looks very curly in shape, little snail-like curls a lot like bi luo chun. Smells sweeter than other Keemun Mao Feng, but st...

Served at Notting Hill coffee shop in Lewes, DE.
Very aromatic loose leaf, slightly smoky, typical for a Keemun of good quality.
Brews a rich, mellow cup with a rounded character and strong warming quality. Probably not the best tea for a hot summer day like today, but I was in the mood for it and it was excellen...

If I've ever had a prototypical Keemun, this is it; it would make an excellent standard against which to compare other examples of this tea, although it also had a few ways in which it stood out.
The dry leaf is fine, and very pleasantly aromatic, hinting at notes of dried fruit and light wood smoke, and suggesting ...

This is a really good black tea. The leaves are very pretty dry. The brewed tea isn't too acidic - I accidentally left the strainer in for over an hour once and it was still very yummy. A second brew is still good, but weaker of course.

Something fascinating and wonderful...a Keemun of top-quality produced outside the traditional area, yet in an area with a tradition of artisanal black tea production. Seems to combine the best qualities of Keemun with qualities of Fujian gong fu / congou black teas. I saved this tea review for last, from the recent ...

I sampled this tea at the Philadelphia Coffee and Tea Festival, and it was mind-blowing! I'm now writing an extended review after brewing it myself at home.

Very interesting tea. It has a robust flavor that's hard to pin down in words. The dominant flavor is one that's savory and fruity at the same time. Perhaps akin to the flavor of sourdough bread? It tastes almost like a black tea, but without the bitterness that causes me to dislike most black teas. Of the tea I've tri...

The aroma is very rich, sweet, and smoky. It reminds me of a sweet red wine. Once brewed it takes on the aroma of an oak cask and it is very pleasant.
The taste is mildly smoky and sweet with a tanginess that reminds me of an oak cask. Perfect tea for an autumn evening!

I really like this tea. It has a nice smoky aroma. The flavor is strong and rich and not too bitter, but it's still crisp. One of the best black teas I've had. I added cream and sugar.
