Ying Ming Yunnan from Imperial Tea Garden

Style: Yunnan Red – Region: Yunnan, China

This is a classic, high-quality Yunnan red. Dry leaf contains some golden tips, more than the picture on the website suggests.

Rich, malty, and with the characteristic aroma of Yunnan black teas. Fruity tones. Very full-bodied and rich, but smooth. Pleasing and not too tannic, much smoother than typical among te...

Nice deep reddish brown liquor. I'd say a wonderful every day Assam. The price is right. The loose tea has a great aroma and inviting appearance. For the price you can't go wrong. It would be fantastic for anyone making their special blends.

Jun. 29th, 2011

The dry leaf has a very strong, sweet, and deep fruity aroma, like candied fruit.

When I brewed the cup, for only 3 minutes, the initial aroma was among the most powerful of any Assam I have tried. This tea is strong, with an edge and a good amount of bitterness, but it is also somewhat light. Tastes more high-gro...

Color: dark brown with hints of amber; has a heavy viscosity and a good bit of cloudiness
Nose: nuts and green spice herbs with a touch of top soil
Taste: hint of walnut but otherwise very generic on the front end, no flavors stick out; again the walnut and not much else on the midpallete, it feels like its leading t...

Jun. 24th, 2011

Very fine fannings; dry leaf has little aroma.

Upton recommends 1-3 minutes, I prefer steeping only 30-45 seconds, and using a bit more leaf than recommended, as it brings out the interesting qualities of the aroma while keeping the tea smoother and milder.

Brewing like this produces a very smooth and clean tea. ...

Jun. 21st, 2011

This was an interesting tea right from the first sip. Although there are some of the typical aromas characteristic of Darjeeling first flush, the overall character is somewhat different from any other teas I have had before.

Greener character, and aroma is more like Indian green teas than black teas: herbaceous ton...

Good tea for breakfast. Not much aroma, but decent taste, and it's strong. Weirdly, it beats Teavana's several strong black teas hands down. Tastier. I like tea that tastes like tea, not dishwater.

37 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 1/5 Value: 1/5
Jun. 18th, 2011

Another disappointment from Teavana. Recommended by the shop clerk for me since I love strong black flavorful teas. Aroma was tempting, but no matter how strong I brew it, there is zero taste! Flat, boring, tastless tea with nice color. Won't buy again.

Big disappointment! This tea has zero flavor. I'm a fan of strong black teas. Usually buy my tea in India and bring it back. This chinese tea smelled quite good in the shop, but the flavor is nil. Won't buy this again. Flat, boring, nothing.

Upton sent this tea to me with my large order as a sample. They were spot on for finding me something greatly to my liking. Bold and full of flavor for a black tea, this Golden Kenya tea stands up to breakfast and offers complexity for afternoon teatime. This tea will be in my next order.

This is a whole-leaf tea but I was less impressed with it relative to other broken-leaf teas I have tried lately.

Brewed as instructed, this is a strong Assam with a classic flavor profile, malty, tannic, slightly savory. I find Upton's description made me expect a smoother tea than this is.

Some Assams have the...

Style: Keemun – Region: Hubei, China

70 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 5/5
Jun. 12th, 2011

The second Hubei Keemun I've tried, and it is immediately recognizable as a Hubei Keemun: the same aroma of chicken soup, the earthy and fruity Keemun tones weaker and taking a back burner, and a slight usually edginess not present in Anhui Keemuns.

Flavor is overall very sweet, there are even some tones of honey in...

Jun. 2nd, 2011

The dry leaf of this tea is straight and thin, giving it a twiggy appearance; it has a light, fruity aroma.

Brewed, this tea is slightly Keemun-like, but with less of the earthy qualities, and a much stronger flavor. It also has some honey-like qualities reminiscent of some greener oolongs, which are hard to notice...

Gold Blend from Barry's Tea

Style: Black Tea – Region: Blend

63 / 100 Aroma: 6/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 2/5
Jun. 2nd, 2011

After having been underwhelmed by the Barry's Irish Breakfast, I tried the Barry's Gold hoping for more. By using 3 bags for a 12 oz. cup and steeping 5 to 7 minutes, this is a fairly good Irish Breakfast tea. The malty aromas (with the somewhat offsetting peachy notes), rich full body, strength without overwhelming as...

TJ's version of Irish Breakfast tastes like primarily Kenyan OP with a bit of Assam added for depth and body. There is not much of the malty character I look for in an Irish Breakfast tea. I have some loose leaf single estate Kenyan OP's which taste and smell very similar and make great iced tea. I think iced tea is wh...

Style: Black Tea – Region: Kericho, Kenya

60 / 100 Aroma: 5/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 4/5
Jun. 1st, 2011

A mild, smooth tea that I prefer steeping for a longer time (around 5 minutes). Aroma is hard to describe, and I am not crazy about it, it has a sort of muted creaminess, but not in a light way. There's a notable absence of most of the tones that characterize black tea, inculding ones from Kenya. The flavor is very ...

May. 28th, 2011

Aroma toasty and caramely, like the crust of a pastry. This tea is so reminiscent of pastry that if I close my eyes, I almost picture there being a baked good, rather than a cup of tea, in front of me.

Dark, rich, but with a pleasingly smooth flavor. Finish leaves a surprisingly lightness on the palate, and a fain...

May. 25th, 2011

Only my third tea from Java (or anywhere in Indonesia), I was excited to try this one as I have yet to get a real sense of what characterizes teas from this region.

This is a pretty average black tea. Not much about it stands out. It has a slightly more savory quality, almost hinting at smokiness. Very full-bodie...

Dry leaf has a sweet, pleasing aroma.

Brewing as instructed, this tea is very mild, with a smooth flavor and a clear quality. There are mild, dried fruit tones, a bit like a Keemun, but this tea is less earthy than Keemun. Some of the light, rice-like qualities common in some Ceylon teas. Aftertaste is clean. Fl...

An average strength black tea, this did not scream "breakfast" to me. More sour than bitter. Nondescript aroma. Not bad, but not great either.

This did not stand out to me relative to any of the mainstream black teas on the market, yet it is significantly pricier.

This was an interesting change of pace, and one of the most unusual black teas I've tried to date. But unlike some unusual teas, this tea was not just different, it was different in a way that I especially enjoyed.

There is some wintergreen in the aroma. It reminds me of a Ceylon tea from the Uva region of Sri Lan...

A very strong Assam, stronger than Upton's description makes it sound. Very full flavor: fairly bitter, slightly sour, very savory, and even slightly salty. Aroma is spicy, suggesting allspice and black pepper. Also a bit smoky, with some fruity tones as well. Peppery finish.

Interesting, but a bit too strong fo...

Clean tasting, mild, with a slightly bitter caramel-like quality. A bit flat, simple tasting, but very pleasant. Has a cooling quality, even when hot, and I think it would make a very classic iced tea.

I was expecting this tea to be similar to Upton's ZP20, Panyang Congou Select, because of the similar name, but i...
