Japanese Black Tea from Simpson & Vail
Style: Black Tea – Region: Japan97 / 100 Aroma: 9/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 5/5

I was really impressed by this tea. I found it delightful, and also easy to brew and easy to drink. Smooth, aromatic, and pleasing in flavor. I've only ever tried one other black tea from Japan, but this one was by far the better of the two, and ranks among the top-tier black teas I've sampled from any region.

Assam - Dikom Estate, GTGFOP1, Black Indian Tea from Simpson & Vail
Style: Assam – Region: Dibrugarh, Assam, India84 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 5/5

This was a smoother, higher-grade Assam that had a much lighter character than is typical for an Assam.
The dry leaf is pretty aesthetically pleasing, it actually looks much nicer than the picture S&V provided on their website: lots of tip, which looks more pale and less golden than some. Its aroma is rather fruity ...
Platinum Jubilee Tea Bags from Murchie's Tea & Coffee Ltd
Style: Black Tea – Region: Blend71 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 5/5

While still good, this was the least desirable of the Murchie's "Jubilee" line I've tried so far. Blended this year (2022) in honor of the late Queen Elizabeth's Platinum Jubilee, it contains a mix of Darjeeling, Assam, Yunnan and Keemun. Given the strong history this company has with teas of those origins individual...

Not great, but decent and tolerable: that's how I'll characterize this blend. In my relatively limited experience, many food-service black teas (including English Breakfasts) taste rather flat, hollow, sometimes excessively bitter, or often weak, as if they've either been allowed to sit out in the open for 20 years, ...

This presents a very pleasant aroma but very little flavor. It is a mild, bland Darjeeling that should have been offered at a low price.

This has a pleasant woodlands aroma, but the flavor is dull and finishes on a bitter note. It is selling for a rock bottom price. You could do worse than this.

This is a very nice tea. Small black leaves with some gold strands. It brews up light color, brown/black, very clear. It has a nice peppery taste with a decent caffeine kick. Very nice in the afternoon.

The aroma has a light sweetness. The taste has a slight sweet honey like flavor, that lingers on the tongue. The liquor (5 mins) is a appealing golden/honey. I would say this a solid all day tea.

The version I'm rating is from the "American" tin (packed in Greensboro, NC, but presumably shipped over in bulk to parse out for that purpose). It doesn't look appreciably different from the photo I uploaded off Twinings' website.
Dry aroma was surprisingly weak for an Irish Breakfast blend, but pleasant to the e...
Decaf from Barry's Tea

This is another box of tea from iherb.com. I'd about given up on finding a decent decaf black tea, but I had a discount and so the price was right.
These are the loose, tagless tea bags typical of Ireland and the UK, containing 3g of tea each. The dry tea smells surprisingly strong for a decaf, but as others have no...

This Ceylon/Assam blend is yet another in a long line of Murchie's teas paying tribute to British royalty in some way. According to the website: "Murchie's Balmoral Blend Tea was originally blended for York House School—a private school for girls which has been an institution in Vancouver for over 75 years. This b...

When I ordered some herbs from iHerb.com, they had better prices for Barry's teas than I can get locally, so I bought a few varieties to try and this is one of them. My box says "Irish Breakfast," so that's where I'm putting the review, but it's otherwise the same green box as the "Original Blend" and I suspect they're...

When first opening the tin, the tea smells earthy and dusty, very much like an inexpensive Yunnan black tea. The leaves are quite large for loose leaf tea at this price, but there are more than a few twig fragments among the leaves. This also matches my experience with inexpensive Yunnan black tea.
While brewing, th...

My samples of Barry's Decaf came from a motel where the "regular" tea was Lipton. As such, I haven't tried the normal, caffeinated breed of this tea yet for comparison's sake. Both there and at home, I tried it before bedtime, as the website advocated (but without knowing of said suggestion yet).

This is for the 2020 vintage. For some reason, for me at least, when it comes to teas, higher prices do not necessarily mean a more satisfying tea. Usually it means more subtle nuances of flavor and aroma. This moderately expensive tea is an example of what I mean. It is fairly mild and there are some light, nippy ...
