Keemun from Rishi Tea

Style: Keemun – Region: Hubei, China

73 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 5/5
Nov. 12th, 2010

This is the first Hubei Keemun I've tried, and I will say it is quite different from other Keemuns, and in fact, quite different from anything I've ever had: count on Rishi to locate and select innovative teas, although I still can't make up my mind about whether I like this particular innovation. I tried brewing this...

Ancient Golden Yunnan from Rishi Tea

80 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 4/5
Nov. 5th, 2010

The dry leaf has an incredibly fruity aroma, like apricot.

This is a strong black tea with a very pleasing aroma and flavor. It is malty like an Assam, but with less edge. Unfortunately, there's only a hint of the pleasing fruity quality that I noticed in the dry leaf. Less bitter than you'd expect, and not very ...

Golden Silk Black from Dream About Tea

Style: Yunnan Gold – Region: Yunnan, China

80 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 4/5
Nov. 3rd, 2010

This is a really smooth delicious Yunnan. It is woodsy, with honey and astringent notes mixed in. The aroma is very Yunnan, with a bit of floral around the edges. I brewed about 1.5 teas. for 3.5 minutes. It is so dark as to be almost black. I did do a second infusion of 1/2 the water for about 5 min. and that was...

Style: Keemun – Region: China

90 / 100 Aroma: 9/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 4/5
Oct. 31st, 2010

Oh, what a lovely tea! Earthy, with a heavy influence of red-wine cask, a touch of smoke, a hint of acid. And that's just the smell of the dry leaves and brewing tea. Winey, earthy, sharp, elegant. Just a super tea. At 5 minutes, it has some rough edges, but a small shot of cream took care of those very nicely.

Hear me roar! I can't tell if I like it or not, but it is definitely smokey. But it is also very smooth and mellow. I don't think those unfamiliar with LS would like it. It's very good, but somehow, for me, the smoke is a bit wrong.

A smoothie it is. If it weren't for all the spice, woodsiness and a tiny sharp edge, it could just slide down so effortlessly. It smells like new pencils, an old barn in the sun, a little spice, a little chocolate, autumn leaves and an illusive sharpness. It tastes pretty much that way, also. Truly a lovely tea. ...

This is a very nice tea, smooth and sweet, but with some depth to it. It is very characteristic of the Yunnans of the past few years, as it is not as deep, not as spicy nor as chocolatey as it used to was. I found you can do a second infusion if you use half the water for about 5 minutes.

Huh, a black tea made in the style of a green. How 'bout that? The leaves have been hand-rolled in a heated wok so they seem to be like Bi Luo Chun - Green Snail Spring. This lovely gold dust [from the golden bud hairs] covered tea comes from Yunnan Province, China and tastes much like a usual Yunnan, woodsy, a tad...

In spite of this not being the top grade, it is a wonderful tea, a bit - very tiny bit - smokey, but winey and deep, with some roasted overtones. Very satisfying.

Oct. 13th, 2010

I always get excited when I see brands carry Lapsang Souchong, mostly because I can't imagine their consumer base for it is very large.

Numi's always tends to be pretty satisfying if not a bit thin and their Smoky Tarry blend is no exception. They really play up the smokey-ness in the aroma but then you take a sip ...

Sep. 30th, 2010

Phooey. This used to my standard for judging Prince of Wales, which is one of my many favorites. However, in the last year or so, the quality has tanked. This makes me very unhappy, as I now have to search out a new standard. Maybe it's just the difficult years tea producers have had recently. I hope so. Otherwis...

Sep. 5th, 2010

This is one of my overall favorite teas. Beautiful color, although it does usually tend to get a little frothy around the edges as its brewing for some reason (have not seen this happen with any other teas.) Its a milder black tea that's great any time of day. Its a little on the expensive side but worth it in my op...

Jul. 12th, 2010

The dry leaves of this tea are very beautiful, and have a fuzzy, soft look to them and are yellow golden color. This color changes to a reddish brown hue after being steeped. The liquor is smooth and has a medium mouth feel, right in between thin and thick. This tea’s liquor was quite spicy, reminiscent of black peppe...

This tea has an inviting campfire-smoke aroma, but tastes very, very smoky, almost meaty, to the exclusion of the basic tea flavor. If you're looking for a less intense smoky flavor, try the Scottish Breakfast (still a little strong for me) or the Russian Caravan (which I love).

English Breakfast from Harney and Sons

May. 16th, 2010

Confusingly, the Harney & Sons website says this stuff is 100% Keemun, while the canister implies it's a blend of Keemun and other unnamed black teas. It tastes like Keemun, though, a little smoky, with that vaguely graphite-y aroma. It's pretty smooth, easy to drink without any accoutrements, and has a good, strong, b...

This has a nice smoky flavor, but not too smoky - I can't handle full-strength Lapsang Souchong or even Scottish Breakfast, but this one is blended with other teas in a proportion that I find quite drinkable. (I think it's something like 1/4 Lapsang Souchong, but I don't remember for sure.) It's a great rainy-day tea, ...
