Toasted Coconut Almond Bark Black Tea from Bigelow Tea
Style: Miscellaneous Blend – Region: Blend63 / 100 Aroma: 6/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 3/5
Jan. 18th, 2023
For a few years, Tazo and Bigelow, in particular, have gone on a bender of producing explicitly dessert-flavored blends, which doesn't bother me, even as it might annoy some tea purists. Hey, who doesn't like some yummy sweet treats after a good dinner? However, Bigelow may have overplayed its hand here and missed th...

Oolong Se Chung from Upton Tea Imports
Style: Se Chung Oolong – Region: China80 / 100 Aroma: 9/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 5/5
Jan. 17th, 2023
This is a nice, mellow oolong, and comes in at a very attractive price. There is nothing attention-grabbing about it; it is just a good tea. The aroma hints at woodlands and hay, and the flavor offers more of the same, with a dash of minerally tannins and vegetal notes. It is fairly light on the palate, and goes dow...

Style: Chai / Spiced Tea – Region: ?????70 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 2/5
Jan. 15th, 2023
A mellow pumpkin spice tea, featuring the spices one would expect (e.g. ginger, cinnamon, clove, etc.) I tasted vanilla in the mix, but it does not contain vanilla. Maybe that was coming from sunflower petals or natural flavorings. I am glad they did not overdo the clove or allspice or nutmeg, that is a mistake that...

Assamica Black Tea from Mei Zi Qing Village from Yunnan Sourcing

I tried this tea right when I ordered it, but did not like it. It had few objectionable qualities, and was actually quite smooth, but simply seemed a little boring. However, I set it in my cupboard for quite some time and sure enough, it has started tasting more interesting after about a year and a half. Still, it is n...

Royal English Breakfast from Harney and Sons
Style: English Breakfast – Region: Blend67 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 2/5
Jan. 1st, 2023
As with their "Green Tea with Coconut & Ginger", I got this at a last-day estate sale for a quarter (proportionate fraction of a bulk pantry buy). Not per bag, but for the entire tin! That's the best value I've had for a good tea. However, you probably can't match that. So how costly is it, for real? A peek at the...

Organic Wuyuan Black from Little Red Cup
Style: Black Tea – Region: Wuyuan, Jiangxi, China81 / 100 Aroma: 10/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 4/5
Jan. 1st, 2023
This tea is really aromatic and smells toasty and bready. It tastes how it smells however it’s just a bit too astringent for my taste but it definitely isn’t the worst and overall it’s a high quality tea, I’m just personally sensitive to astringency.

Organic Wuyuan Black from Little Red Cup
Style: Black Tea – Region: Wuyuan, Jiangxi, China92 / 100 Aroma: 9/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 5/5
Jan. 1st, 2023
This is my first black tea that I've ever tried from Wuyuan county; prior to this I have only had green teas, which I've tended to like.
The dry leaf has a fine texture and looks slightly greyish with reddish highlights. It has a pleasing aroma that strongly resembles the lighter examples of Keemun, but is rather di...

Japanese Black Tea from Simpson & Vail

This is a really wonderful tea! It’s not astringent or bitter at all but it’s still thick bodied and flavorful! It’s a black tea but it has notes of green tea flavor! It even has a subtle toasty grain flavor which is suggestive of genmaicha. I love it!

I've tried what I'm pretty sure is this same exact grade of tea from the same garden, but sold by Upton Tea Imports, a while back, and I loved it. I loved it this time too!
The brewed cup has a strong and complex aroma. It has a moderate toastiness to it, with notes of cocoa and strong notes of wintergreen, which I ...

Colombian Leafy Black Organic Tea from Simpson & Vail

Dec. 30th, 2022
This tea is really good and tastes deep and roasty. It’s thick bodied and not too astringent. I like it a lot and it’s classic tasting but it’s also not super interesting. It’s good if you need just a regular black tea in the morning!

Vietnam Ha Giang Black from Simpson & Vail

The aroma is really nice with notes of dried fruit. The taste is pretty nice too and it has very little astringency which is how I like it, however there is a bit of bitterness and the tea is also slightly watery and not as thick bodied as I’d like. Even with all those criticisms though, it’s still a perfectly plea...

Apricot Tea Bags from Murchie's Tea & Coffee Ltd

Dec. 23rd, 2022
Murchie's has a large repertoire of teas; most last, some don't. This one has been around since at least the mid 2000s, when we started ordering from them, so it must have built a following. I finally decided to order it at the behest of my wife, who likes all things apricot. It doesn't disappoint.
The aroma and...

Rwanda OPA Rukeri from Simpson & Vail

Simply exceptional! This is one of the teas that I think is much better than its commercial description suggests! This is the second tea I've tried from Rukeri estate; the first was a BOP grade from Upton Imports. This tea was similar and I loved both.
The dry leaf is finely broken, much more so than I expect for th...

Pretty good tea! The aroma wasn’t super strong but it was nice and kinda reminded me of raisins. The taste was really flavorful right from the start with fruity and floral notes, however it did taste slightly soapy to me. Overall though it wasn’t too bitter or astringent and the taste was very interesting and uniqu...

Dec. 16th, 2022
The aroma of this is quite nice, and the vanilla flavor is quite mild - a little too mild, imo. This makes for a pleasant, smooth cuppa, but I was hoping for a little more intensity. The price is a little on the high side. I will drink this up, but I probably won't order it again.

This is a perfectly nice, reasonably priced English breakfast tea, offered at a good price too. The Assam and Ceylon teas blend together well, and create a mellow flavor with a dash of butterscotch. I had this with plant milk; English breakfast teas are meant to be served with a little milk.

Really nice cup of tea! It was thick bodied and the flavor was rich and sweet. I didn’t notice much of an aroma however, but I could be having sinus issues now. I’ll come back and update my review if I notice more of an aroma later! But either way it still is a rly nice tea!

Another "conference tea" here...I had a couple bags there, and brought another home to steep in boiling well water. Water quality at the meeting was good, so my impressions were consistent in both places.
The best part of this tea was its dry-bag smell: potent, high-quality bergamot, but still not too much to ove...

Tanzania Luponde Black Organic Tea FOP from Simpson & Vail

This was one of the higher-quality teas I've tried from Tanzania, pleasing to drink, unique and interesting, also extraordinarily value-priced.
The dry leaf has a pleasant and potent aroma, malty and with a hint of caraway and fruity notes. The leaf is on the intact / whole side of what I would expect for the FOP gr...

Aroma is not too strong but it does smell nice and interesting too! It actually has notes of raspberry in the aroma and taste and it’s rly unique and good! Otherwise it just tastes like a very classic assam tea, there is no objectionable astringentness or bitterness.

Holiday Spice from Murchie's Tea & Coffee Ltd

This blend of rooibos, orange peels, hibiscus, and cloves (the visually obvious ingredients...I think there's some cinnamon and ginger in this too) wasted no time rocketing to the top of my flavored-rooibos list, and very nearly the top of all herbals for me. The website says the tea is modeled after pomander oranges,...

This was a rather strong, but high-quality Assam sold for an exceptionally good price.
The dry leaf has a potent aroma, spicy and fruity. I already notice the raspberry notes even in the dry leaf. But the aroma somehow betrays a slight harshness: I can tell this is going to be a tea with a bit of an edge, even befor...

Warrior's Brew from Native American Tea Company
Style: Flavored Black Tea – Region: Blend67 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 2/5

This is quite a tasty and well-conceived blend, novel yet nice in both aroma and flavor, holding its own in those departments with any herbal/black bagged combination out there. However, I wish it were stronger, more befitting its name.
The rectangular, stringless tea bags are small, about half the volume of Celest...

Peach Black Tea from Stash Tea
Style: Fruit Black Tea – Region: ?????85 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 4/5

I actually like this one. It isn't as good as loose-leaf tea would be, but for a tea bag it's nice. I brewed the water to 205°F and let the bag steep under one of those Primula hats for several minutes. Both black tea and peach were present in the strong flavor, but it didn't go bitter. Usually, black tea of fannings ...
