Mboma Estate BOP from Upton Tea Imports
Style: Black Tea – Region: Malawi77 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 5/5
Jul. 13th, 2011
Muted aroma, but upon drinking it becomes more interesting. Both strongly bitter and moderately sweet. Suggestions of anise, cinnamon, rice. Upton's description is accurate: you can brew this quite strongly without it becoming unpleasantly bitter.
Very complex for such a finely-broken tea. Don't be deceived by t...
Ti Kuan Yin (Oolong Goddess) from Adagio Teas
Style: Tie Guan Yin – Region: Fujian, China67 / 100 Aroma: 4/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 3/5
Jul. 12th, 2011
This rating is when it is made as an iced tea, as I personally do not like this tea warm, but I think it makes an incredibly delicious, and refreshing iced tea in the summer.

Style: Yunnan Red – Region: Yunnan, China77 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 5/5
Jul. 11th, 2011
This is a classic, high-quality Yunnan red. Dry leaf contains some golden tips, more than the picture on the website suggests.
Rich, malty, and with the characteristic aroma of Yunnan black teas. Fruity tones. Very full-bodied and rich, but smooth. Pleasing and not too tannic, much smoother than typical among te...
Tippy Orthodox GBOP Assam from Upton Tea Imports
Style: Assam – Region: Assam, India100 / 100 Aroma: 10/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 5/5

Nice deep reddish brown liquor. I'd say a wonderful every day Assam. The price is right. The loose tea has a great aroma and inviting appearance. For the price you can't go wrong. It would be fantastic for anyone making their special blends.

Jun. 29th, 2011
The dry leaf has a very strong, sweet, and deep fruity aroma, like candied fruit.
When I brewed the cup, for only 3 minutes, the initial aroma was among the most powerful of any Assam I have tried. This tea is strong, with an edge and a good amount of bitterness, but it is also somewhat light. Tastes more high-gro...
Ten Wu Fine Oolong from Ten Ren Tea
Style: Oolong Tea – Region: Taiwan / Formosa83 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 5/5
Jun. 28th, 2011
This is a green wulong tea from Taiwan, in tea bag form from Ten Ren. This is a complex tea, but its vegetal and floral characteristics stand out the most to me. There is also some slight sweetness, and the overall character is quite rich and smooth. I have some loose leaf King of Tieguanyin, another green wulong, that...

Jun. 28th, 2011
I got this tea for a general idea of the relative quality of Ten Ren's Longjings, without much investment.
You can get a lot of loose Longjing here for not much money at all. The downside is that the quality isn't so great. Many leaves are broken, other leaves are bent, etc. For most people, I would recommend much h...
Organic Kukicha from Divinitea
Style: Hojicha – Region: Japan67 / 100 Aroma: 6/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 4/5
Jun. 27th, 2011
Very creamy for this style. Compared to other roasted kukicha (kukicha+hojicha), this has a richer, more full-bodied character, but a milder roast. Aroma has tones of vanilla. Much more oolong-like than any other hojicha I have tried.

Jun. 25th, 2011
The aroma of this tea is a bit mild and slightly floral. The aroma and taste are both delicate and refreshing, and a bit toasty. This Bai Mudan has no bitterness or astringency, and is quite full and smooth, with some subtle sweetness. Much better than supermarket white teas, to be sure. From the first cup, I like this...

Color: dark brown with hints of amber; has a heavy viscosity and a good bit of cloudiness
Nose: nuts and green spice herbs with a touch of top soil
Taste: hint of walnut but otherwise very generic on the front end, no flavors stick out; again the walnut and not much else on the midpallete, it feels like its leading t...
Pai Mu Tan from Novus Tea
Style: White Peony Tea – Region: China53 / 100 Aroma: 5/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 2/5
Jun. 24th, 2011
Produces an amber brew with a light, floral aroma, and underlying tones of caramel and autumn leaves. There's also a noticeable fishy quality to the aroma, however, which I find unpleasant. Flavor is surprisingly metallic, although not necessarily in a bad way. Clear, clean, a bit crisp.
I recommend a longer stee...
Season's Pick Bulwa Estate PF1 from Upton Tea Imports
Style: Black Tea – Region: Tanzania67 / 100 Aroma: 6/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 4/5
Jun. 24th, 2011
Very fine fannings; dry leaf has little aroma.
Upton recommends 1-3 minutes, I prefer steeping only 30-45 seconds, and using a bit more leaf than recommended, as it brings out the interesting qualities of the aroma while keeping the tea smoother and milder.
Brewing like this produces a very smooth and clean tea. ...
Dragon Well Green Tea from Novus Tea

I tend to not like these high-end tea bag teas, and I tend to find them overpriced, but this one is surprisingly good. On par with some loose-leaf dragon well / lung ching that I've had, but with its own unique twist.
I found this tea to be surprisingly chamomile-like in aroma, but obviously with a caffeine kick, a...

This was an interesting tea right from the first sip. Although there are some of the typical aromas characteristic of Darjeeling first flush, the overall character is somewhat different from any other teas I have had before.
Greener character, and aroma is more like Indian green teas than black teas: herbaceous ton...
Irish Breakfast from Twinings

Jun. 18th, 2011
Good tea for breakfast. Not much aroma, but decent taste, and it's strong. Weirdly, it beats Teavana's several strong black teas hands down. Tastier. I like tea that tastes like tea, not dishwater.

Another disappointment from Teavana. Recommended by the shop clerk for me since I love strong black flavorful teas. Aroma was tempting, but no matter how strong I brew it, there is zero taste! Flat, boring, tastless tea with nice color. Won't buy again.

Big disappointment! This tea has zero flavor. I'm a fan of strong black teas. Usually buy my tea in India and bring it back. This chinese tea smelled quite good in the shop, but the flavor is nil. Won't buy this again. Flat, boring, nothing.

I tend to love Ceylon green teas from Upton. This one, however, was strange. There were some dusty tones that I normally only encounter in shu Pu-erh. Highly vegetal, and not in a pleasant way. Almost undrinkable hot. I let it cool to room temperature and some fruity tones, reminiscent of yellow raisins, which I f...

Color: pale yet thick brown color, nice heavy weight
Nose: green herbal nose, a little dirty and musky as well

Golden Kenya GFBOP/TGFOP from Upton Tea Imports
Style: Black Tea – Region: Kenya93 / 100 Aroma: 9/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 5/5

Upton sent this tea to me with my large order as a sample. They were spot on for finding me something greatly to my liking. Bold and full of flavor for a black tea, this Golden Kenya tea stands up to breakfast and offers complexity for afternoon teatime. This tea will be in my next order.

This is a whole-leaf tea but I was less impressed with it relative to other broken-leaf teas I have tried lately.
Brewed as instructed, this is a strong Assam with a classic flavor profile, malty, tannic, slightly savory. I find Upton's description made me expect a smoother tea than this is.

China Dao Ren Special Organic Green from Upton Tea Imports

Jun. 13th, 2011
I greatly enjoyed this tea. Brewed as instructed, this tea produces a rich, strongly aromatic cup.
Interesting and quite different from other Chinese green teas I have tried. At first I thought it a bit odd: while this is a very intensely aromatic and flavorful tea, the flavor and aroma are both oddly muted; it's ...

Style: Keemun – Region: Hubei, China70 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 5/5
Jun. 12th, 2011
The second Hubei Keemun I've tried, and it is immediately recognizable as a Hubei Keemun: the same aroma of chicken soup, the earthy and fruity Keemun tones weaker and taking a back burner, and a slight usually edginess not present in Anhui Keemuns.
Flavor is overall very sweet, there are even some tones of honey in...

The dry leaf of this tea is straight and thin, giving it a twiggy appearance; it has a light, fruity aroma.
Brewed, this tea is slightly Keemun-like, but with less of the earthy qualities, and a much stronger flavor. It also has some honey-like qualities reminiscent of some greener oolongs, which are hard to notice...
