Mango Maui Black Tea from Hawaiian Islands Tea Company
Style: Fruit Black Tea – Region: Blend75 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 4/5
May. 5th, 2018
How appropriate it is that I opened this box, bought in Kailua and brought to Oklahoma, on the night after a the largest Big Island quake since the 1970s, while Kilauea's East Rift fissure belches steam, acrid fumes and fountains of lava through Leilani Estates. Would Mango Maui prove as smooth and relaxing as a seabr...

Earl Grey from Farmer Brothers
Style: Earl Grey Tea – Region: Blend61 / 100 Aroma: 6/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 4/5
Apr. 8th, 2018
Farmer Brothers apparently uses the same relatively rich base tea as for their plain black offering, which similarly brews up dark and tastes stronger than most brand-name bagged teas. As such, you can pluck a bag or three off your hotel's or conference's tea table with confidence you'll get a passable, perhaps even r...

When Life Gives You Lemons Add Mint & Ginger from Trader Joe's
Style: Flavored Green Tea – Region: Blend72 / 100 Aroma: 6/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 4/5
Mar. 28th, 2018
Teas with ridiculously long names seem attracted to me. Whether that's an attraction of the pleasant and fortuitous variety, or more akin to flies swirling around steaming dung heaps, is another story. This blend is one of the few loose-leaf offerings I've seen at TJ's, and contains several dried ingredients that var...

Green Tea with Pomegranate from Bigelow Tea
Style: Fruit Green Tea – Region: ?????62 / 100 Aroma: 5/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 4/5
Mar. 1st, 2018
Mistakenly and distracted by engaging conversation, I grabbed a couple of bags at a conference, thinking this was straight green Bigelow tea as typically served, without looking carefully at the little red strip declaring, "with pomegranate". I still didn't notice upon ripping open the wrapper, dropping bag into cup a...

Butterscotch Blondie from Tazo Tea
Style: Flavored Black Tea – Region: Blend63 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 1/5
Feb. 23rd, 2018
Sweet dessert-flavor teas will snatch my attention every time. This has, for both wonderful and disgraceful reasons.
The Wonderful: Tazo has a small line of enticing new black teas flavored with herbal blends so as to resemble assorted cookies and cakes. Having loved butterscotch-chip cookies as a kid, I grabbed...

Coconut Matcha from Zhena's Gypsy Tea
Style: Flavored Green Tea – Region: Blend70 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 3/5
Feb. 4th, 2018
Setting aside the blatant commercial appeal to hipster New Age hocus-pocus in the labeling's verbiage and art, the composition of this tea showed promise on the shelf. I like coconut a lot, and have come to tolerate matcha-infused green tea, so this looked like it was worth a try when I saw it discounted at Sprouts. ...

Green Ginger from Tazo Tea
Style: Flavored Green Tea – Region: China64 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 4/5
Jan. 28th, 2018
Investigating the dry bag (looks and aroma), then the wet bag in-cup, I expected the ginger to have a lot more kick. Not that I thought it would treat the epiglottis as a punching bag, like Vernors soda, or the strong "Ginger Beer" I often drank in college...but this presentation did set expectations that reality coul...

Maple Chai from Murchie's Tea & Coffee Ltd

Jan. 27th, 2018
Tea-flavor blends are like marriages: a wide spectrum of compatibilities and results, from the "opposites attracted" who somehow live happily-ever-after to the seemingly alike soulmates on the road to disastrous divorce, vice versa, and every outcome in between.
In that context, leave it to a Canadian tea company...

Organic Moroccan Mint Green Tea from Trader Joe's
Style: Green Tea with Mint – Region: Blend64 / 100 Aroma: 6/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 4/5
Jan. 14th, 2018
Reading the online description, I had a hearty belt-buckle chuckle realizing that the title contains "Moroccan"...in a blend from South India (green tea), U.S. Pacific Northwest (spearmint), and region not given, but not likely Morocco (lemongrass). The product itself was comped to me by the store manager after he ov...

Jasmine Tea (16 ct.) from Yamamotoyama
Style: Jasmine Tea – Region: China56 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 3/5
Jan. 7th, 2018
I've only tried and reviewed a few jasmine greens so far, but Yamamotoyama's is the first whose jasmine aroma (dry bag and wet cup) clearly stood as vastly stronger than the flavor. The jasmine taste was detectable, no mistaking it, but couldn't deliver on the promise made by the smell. The aroma took me back to warm...

Pineapple Waikiki Black Tea from Hawaiian Islands Tea Company
Style: Fruit Black Tea – Region: Blend64 / 100 Aroma: 10/10 Flavor: 2/5 Value: 3/5
Jan. 7th, 2018
Being a fan of pineapple as a taste, and seeing that this offering was reasonably inexpensive (for Hawaii anyway) at the Wal Mart in Kona, I figured to give it a try. While not bad, each step of the process disappointed me a bit more, leaving an impression less favorable than the potential.
Each tea bag in a standa...

Herbal Green from Murchie's Tea & Coffee Ltd
Style: Flavored Green Tea – Region: Blend68 / 100 Aroma: 4/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 5/5
Dec. 3rd, 2017
I haven't had a bad offering from Murchie's yet, and this one isn't either. Of the herbs used to flavor the Chinese green tea (lemongrass, ginger, peppermint, fennel, and lemon peel), I can taste the fennel and lemongrass best, and the peppermint least. Since peppermint tends to be a potent, dominating kind of herb, ...

Black Currant from Murchie's Tea & Coffee Ltd
Style: Flavored Black Tea – Region: Blend85 / 100 Aroma: 6/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 5/5
Nov. 8th, 2017
Three times since 2003, I have marveled at the smell of the loose-leaf black currant tea samples in Murchie's Victoria store. Zero times I've come back with any. Don't ask; I don't know why. Guess it just fell out of the line behind other teas that ended up stuffing our luggage.
Rectifying that negligence has bee...

Golden Chai™ - Spiced Assam Black Tea from Numi Organic Tea
Style: Chai / Spiced Tea – Region: Assam, India49 / 100 Aroma: 3/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 3/5
Nov. 3rd, 2017
This was among the least-appealing chai teas I've had so far—decent-tasting with some effort, but also, having an important turn-off and separate weakness that preclude a better rating.
The dry-bag and poured cup smelled dutifully spicy, but also somewhat urinary. That caught me off guard, and probably isn't the ...

Toasted Rice Green - Gen Mai Cha from Numi Organic Tea
Style: Genmaicha – Region: ?????34 / 100 Aroma: 1/10 Flavor: 2/5 Value: 3/5
Oct. 14th, 2017
Toasted rice is a substance I enjoy in some contexts (in a breakfast-cereal blend, a topping on ice cream, or embedded in fudge and soft-chocolate candy), but I had no idea what to make of the combination of it with tea. Now I do...not a big fan.
The poured scent was practically nonexistent, as the tea's color ch...

Aged Earl Grey™ - Bergamot Black from Numi Organic Tea
Style: Earl Grey Tea – Region: Assam, India75 / 100 Aroma: 10/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 3/5
Oct. 5th, 2017
This was one of the atypical flavored teas I've had with a scent (both dry-bag and in-cup) noticeably bigger than the taste. I'm having trouble rating this tea because it depends on what you're seeking. Aroma? Strong, fruity, potent, almost mouth-watering. Looks and taste? The base tea is very rich and flavorful, ...

Earl Grey Decaffeinated from Twinings
Style: Earl Grey Tea – Region: ?????37 / 100 Aroma: 2/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 3/5
Sep. 30th, 2017
As of this writing, the Cracker Barrel restaurant chain has started offering this tea as their mainstay Earl Grey for service, without telling the customer up front that it is decaffeinated. My wife ordered hot tea, expecting the usual (if tolerable) Lipton rubbish, and got this rubbish instead.
I need to qualify t...

White Rose - Velvet Garden™ from Numi Organic Tea
Style: Flavored White Tea – Region: ?????26 / 100 Aroma: 3/10 Flavor: 1/5 Value: 2/5
Sep. 25th, 2017
This is a profoundly weird drink, not only because its effluent of rose petals and white tea color-morphs like a chameleon from steel gray to gray-green to brown while steeping.
Velvet Garden or Velvet Elvis? The brew smells faintly like burning incense that used to waft out of a hippie neighbor's 3-room backhous...

Green Tea with Peach from Bigelow Tea
Style: Fruit Green Tea – Region: ?????70 / 100 Aroma: 6/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 4/5
Sep. 25th, 2017
Bigelow's peach-flavored green tea pleasantly surprised me. I had rated their "Perfect Peach" herbal blend slightly lower, primarily because of the artificial flavoring that partly tastes that way.
The quality of the green tea seems good, and brews up a rich, deep amber in-cup. Some finely powdered sediment even fe...

Jasmine Green (Formerly Monkey King) from Numi Organic Tea
Style: Jasmine Tea – Region: Hunan, China54 / 100 Aroma: 5/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 2/5
Sep. 24th, 2017
My bag of Numi's Jasmine Green came in an assortment box that was priced unusually high (almost 6 bucks at Wal Mart!). The box only contains 16 bags, which leaves the consumer feeling rather taken advantage of, especially at such a cost. Nevertheless, it's a fair and true counterargument if you holler at me, "Look, b...

Organic Merry Mint Green Tea (Teabags) from Stash Tea
Style: Green Tea with Mint – Region: ?????51 / 100 Aroma: 4/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 3/5
Sep. 22nd, 2017
Mellow and smooth, but too weak for my taste, this tea will appeal much more to those who enjoy straight, unadulterated spearmint as a tea flavoring. If not for the caffeine, this would make a relaxing bedtime blend. Spearmint is the overwhelmingly dominant flavor and smell, with hardly a hint of the green tea whose ...

Zen Filterbags from Tazo Tea

A couple of bags of this product wandered into my fingers, then into my suitcase (of their own free will—don't you believe me?) from a conference hotel's catered-breakfast table. It would have taken at least two more to yield a robustly flavored cup. The taste was best described as pleasant but distant, akin to the...

English Tea No. 1 from Ahmad Tea

This bagged tea didn't earn quite as high of a rating as Ahmad's loose-leaf version of English Afternoon, but it was very good. Oodles of bags of this turned up in my pantry in an unmarked tin (my wife likes it, apparently), so I figured to give it a try.
I could taste the bergamot a bit -- not as much as with th...

My first pu-erh just had to be this, didn't it? As of now, I still haven't tried any other, and being an ignoramus of massive proportions about this type of tea, have no clue how it should taste. So what do I do? Drink a chocolate/nutmeg pu-erh with rooibos whose non-tea flavors (that I happen to like a lot) mask an...

Peppermint White Tea from Imperial Organic
Style: Flavored White Tea – Region: ?????59 / 100 Aroma: 6/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 2/5
May. 27th, 2017
First of all, please note that you get only 18 bags per box instead of the customary 20. In other words, you will be shortchanged two bags per box from the start, for a price comparable to (if not higher than) other name-brand organic teas on the store shelf.
This practice detracts decidedly from my "value" rating....
