Thurbo Estate Second Flush FTGFOP1 Darjeeling from Upton Tea Imports

Style: Darjeeling Second Flush – Region: Darjeeling, India

45 / 100 Aroma: 5/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 2/5
Jul. 18th, 2024

This is a very mild, bland tea. Lemon and sugar overwhelms it, but it is decent on its own or with a splash of milk - then it is pleasant and bready, with some mild tannins coming in to the mouthfeel. Priced too high given the quality, imo.

Seldom have I sampled a tea with such a gap between aroma (or lack thereof) and taste. It's a vast chasm, really. The Grand Canyon might be a good analog with another several million years of erosion, widening and deepening.

This was a motel pickup somewhere out on the Great Plains. I don't recall where. I had a...

Darjeeling Black Tea from Rituals

79 / 100 Aroma: 6/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 4/5
Jun. 23rd, 2024

Here's another new Rituals tea for me (and this website), also first sampled at the Days Inn in Hays, KS. As usual, and even though Hays water isn't bad, I also hauled a bag home to try on my well water for fair comparison with other ratings.

Upon ripping open the foil-lined package, the smell that greeted my nos...

Style: Darjeeling Black Tea – Region: Darjeeling, India

88 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 5/5
Jun. 5th, 2024

This tea is really good! It has a nice bready aroma and a delicate but full bodied flavor with chocolatey hints. The only reason I'm not giving it an even higher score is that it is a bit basic, however I still love basic teas when they are really high quality and good like this one. This tea is not too astringent or b...

There is not much flavor here, but there are no unpleasant flavors or aromas either. I have certainly had stronger gunpowder teas, but this one is very easy to drink, and offered at a low price.

I love teas with a toasted flavor like this. This tea is certainly a great example of a good hojicha. This tea is sweet and thick bodied, slightly astringent in a good way, and of course has that wonderful toasted flavor. The aroma is very nice and also has the toasted smell. This tea is yet another old tea I'm reviewi...

I really enjoy this tea a lot! The aroma is very pleasant, it kind of smells like pumpkin seeds. The taste is the best part, it is very smooth and thick bodied and not too astringent or bitter at all! It tastes like raisins and pumpkin seeds to me. It is a very comforting cup of tea. It is still being sold today and it...

I really like this tea! It is thick bodied and flavorful, although it is just slightly too astringent for me. For me personally oolongs are not my absolute favorite type, but I can tell this is a good one. It's very aromatically interesting and it has not gotten bad with age, this is another old tea from around 2017 th...

I absolutely love this tea! It's full bodied and aromatic. The aroma is bready (like most black teas smell to me) but also a bit fruity like raisins, and also Indian, like cardamon or something. The tea is perfect because I'm sensitive to astringency and it isn't too astringent, but it has just enough astringency to be...

This tea is really great! The taste is very smooth, it's not too astringent or bitter. The aroma is very nice, it has a slight dank pu erh smell, which is interesting and I like it. The aroma is mild, most likely though because this tea I am tasting is old (2018) and was in my pantry for a while. For a tea that is not ...

Organic Irish Breakfast Tea from Equal Exchange

61 / 100 Aroma: 5/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 3/5
May. 28th, 2024

My review here is decidedly mixed. Since this isn't a bad tea, folks who are interested in the fair-trade/organic aspects may find this a good alternative to the relative dearth of such certifications among Irish Breakfast bagged teas. Being less refined, more of a troglodyte, I just want tea to taste good regardless...

This tea seems pretty good quality and has a nice, but mild green tea aroma. The price is reasonable and the tea is good enough that I think the value is fair. It tastes like a classic green tea however it is slightly too bitter and astringent for my taste. I have a lower threshold for these qualities than some and it ...

Idulgashinna Estate Organic BOP from Upton Tea Imports

Style: Ceylon Black Tea – Region: Sri Lanka / Ceylon

65 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 4/5
May. 23rd, 2024

This is pretty robust for a Ceylon tea, with some tannin bite and a woody aroma. It was quite a bit better with milk than with lemon and sugar, which surprised me. With just a little vegan milk added, it makes a very good breakfast style tea. My intention in buying this was to mix it with a Darjeeling for iced tea (...

May. 21st, 2024

I decided to try something different. Instead of getting Upton's iced tea blend (which I like a lot) that is made from Ceylons and Darjeelings, why not get some Ceylons and Darjeelings and mix them together? This way I can also get to know the individual teas. This one did not let me down. It is on the mild side, b...

The aroma is very pleasant, a nice black tea with a hint of fruit (peaches). The liquor (5 min steep) is a medium brown with a bit of red. The flavor is excellent, a good strong taste, with a slight tangy after taste I would say perfect start for your morning. This tea would easily accommodate sugar or cream.

I've only chugged one other green tea of the Mao Feng type (a Tazo bagged offering), and enjoyed that, so I figured I'd try a bigger-leaf, sacheted version. This is one of the best green teas I've had, lots of personality, and mostly worth the slight premium one pays when shoveling a stack of bills across the counter ...
