Assam SFTGBOP Tonga Second Flush from TeaGschwendner
Style: Assam – Region: Assam, India67 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 3/5
Nov. 1st, 2014
I'm having mixed feelings about this tea. Initially the smell was amazing, the dry leaf had a complex and spicy aroma. I wasn't as excited about the smell of the tea once it was brewed, the smell lost all of it's spice tones and reminded me of most basic black teas. The taste was pretty basic as well and also remind...

Yunnan Breakfast from Rishi Tea

Pleasant for a black tea, not bitter, and seems to be of good quality, but it tastes pretty ordinary to me. Black tea isn't my favorite, but I like trying them to see what I'll find. I added milk and this improved it a bit. I don't have anything negative to say about this tea, but it isn't really for me.

A sample from the store in Regensburg, Germany. Thank you for the sample!
Dry leaf has a remarkable aroma, strong, spicy and fruity, reminiscent of potpourri. The smell of the dry leaf is incredibly pleasant, and is what I liked most about this tea, although the rest was enjoyable too.
The brewed cup is much mo...

Bio Ruanda OP from Teehaus Bachfischer
Style: Black Tea – Region: Rwanda100 / 100 Aroma: 10/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 5/5
Oct. 29th, 2014
Purchased at Teehaus Bachfischer's storefront in Regensburg, Germany.
Wow, this tea is amazing! Definitely the best Orange Pekoe grade tea I've ever tried...and competes with the best of the best, things with those long labels like TGFOP and FTGFOP and the like.
Dry leaf, dark, wiry, and nondescript looking, has...

Tee Pyramide Assam BOP Bio from Heimbs
Style: Assam – Region: Assam, India77 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 2/5
Oct. 26th, 2014
Served at the Carolaschlösschen, the cafe on the Carolasee in the Großer Garten, Dresden, Germany. The most expensive cup of tea I had in Germany (at 4 Euro) but a contender for the best.
This was a very potent Assam, edgy, but with a rich aroma. Strongly malty, with notes of dried fruit. This would be an excel...

Fine Aromatic Darjeeling from Pure Tea Selection
Style: Darjeeling Black Tea – Region: Darjeeling, India87 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 5/5
Oct. 26th, 2014
Served with breakfast at the Hotel Alt-Görlitz in Görlitz, Germany, an exquisite breakfast, I might add, and this top-notch tea was an excellent addition to it, on par with the rest of the food served there.
A high-quality sachet, filled with large pieces of relatively high-grade tea. Aroma is strongly fruity, of...

Darjeeling from Meßmer (Messmer)
Style: Darjeeling Black Tea – Region: Darjeeling, India70 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 4/5
Oct. 26th, 2014
Served with breakfast at City Herberge, Dresden. A middle-of-the-road Darjeeling tea bag, not very complex, but recognizable as a Darjeeling, and a couple steps up from a typical black tea (definitely far ahead of Meßmer's regular black tea (Klassik), which did not impress me.
Light-bodied for a black tea, dark am...

Arya Ruby, Darjeeling Black Tea, Second Flush 2014, Organic from Happy Earth Tea
Style: Darjeeling Second Flush – Region: Darjeeling, India90 / 100 Aroma: 10/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 3/5
Oct. 23rd, 2014
Arya Ruby offers a rich aroma of fermenting fruit—grapes, apples, apricots. The first taste of the liquor is smooth, slightly sweet, and seemingly little else. But then notes of tangy fruit and a slightly drying astringency begin to develop on the back of the tongue, which, it seems, signals the real development of f...

Oct. 23rd, 2014
The aroma of the dry leaves is sweet and muscatel, it reminds me a little of white wine and scuppernongs, with a rich undertone of sweet potatoes and roasted peanuts. I think spending time in the South is having an effect on my nose, those are such Southern foods! Regardless of my nose's current influence, the smells i...

Golden Monkey Black Tea from TeaVivre
Style: Golden Monkey – Region: Fujian, China73 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 2/5
Oct. 23rd, 2014
The liquor brewed to rich nut-brown with a tinge of coppery-gold, and gave off a subdued fragrance suggestive of chocolate and toasted marshmallow. The taste was also subdued but pleasing—a soft floral sweetness. I had brewed a previous cup, steeping for 3 minutes, and I remember the flavor being fuller and more deve...

Yunnan Gold Supreme. Organic from Happy Earth Tea
Style: Yunnan Gold – Region: Yunnan, China87 / 100 Aroma: 10/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 3/5
Oct. 22nd, 2014
This tea brewed to a cloudy copper tone, and smelled richly of honey, chocolate, and earthy spice—cinnamon, or allspice, or the peppery side of cardamom. It smelled as if it would be oily, in the way of a full-bodied Scotch, but also syrupy and sweet.
The mouthfeel is smooth, but on the watery side compared to th...

Vietnam Yen Bai OP Organic from TeaGschwendner
Style: Black Tea – Region: Vietnam67 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 2/5
Oct. 22nd, 2014
Purchased in the TeaGschwender shop in Regensburg, Germany.
Dry leaf is not very aromatic; it faintly suggests cocoa.
Brews up a very typical cup. I used TeaGschwendner's recommendation of 4 minutes, but used less leaf than they recommend, and this produced results that I liked. I was able to make a second stee...

Mountain Organic Indonesian Black from Tea at Sea

The aroma of this tea is sweet and malty, there are notes of berries and raisins with a hint of roasted peanuts at the finish. I shan't deny it, the dry leaves smell quite yummy, but I do love my sweet black teas.
After that especially enjoyable sniffing, it is time for tasting! The first sip is very sweet and quite...

Ostfriesische Teemischung Broken from Eilles
Style: East Frisian Tea (Ostfriesentee) – Region: Assam, India83 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 4/5
Oct. 20th, 2014
Purchased in the Eilles store in Regensburg, on my recent trip to Germany. I really enjoy this tea; it's a potent black tea blend, but with a very different character from Assam-based Irish breakfast blends. I drunk it unsweetened and with no milk.
Aroma is rich, malty but also vegetal, slightly roasty, suggesting...

Darjeeling Royal Second Flush Blatt from Eilles
Style: Darjeeling Second Flush – Region: Darjeeling, India80 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 4/5

An excellent tea served in the cafe of the Hotel Altstadt-Engel Regensburg, Germany, with breakfast. Served in a glass teacup, which was nice because I could see the color as it was brewing.
A smooth, balanced Darjeeling. Light in color and character for a second flush, possibly even passing as 1st flush after bre...

Klassik from Meßmer (Messmer)
Style: Black Tea – Region: Blend47 / 100 Aroma: 5/10 Flavor: 2/5 Value: 2/5
Oct. 18th, 2014
One of the many teas I tried on my recent trip in Germany. A weak tea bag that was somewhat underwhelming, but that had some interesting complexity lurking in there. I'd be curious to try a loose-leaf version of this tea, and use more leaf, because I can see it producing much better results.
Aroma is weak but rath...

Black Tea from Lipton Tea

Ah, Lipton: the tea ubiquitous within the fine dining institutions of my college campus. I tend to drink this when I'm in need of something strongly caffeinated but I just can't tolerate the thought of choking down more instant coffee crystals dissolved in lukewarm tap water from the bathroom down the hall from my lab....

This was a good Darjeeling. Subtly flavored with no bitterness. I thought this was a high quality tea for being bagged. The price was typical for a cafe, I've heard that boxes of this tea can be pricey.

Not bad for a black tea. Detected a little bitterness in the finish, but it wasn't off putting. Also smelled and tasted subtly raisin-like. Not bad, but not outstanding and not my personal favorite style of tea--especially given that it's rather pricey.

The aroma is...well, it is awesome, there are notes of dried cherries and apricots, with more subtle notes of sweet potatoes, roasted peanuts, and lastly a tiny hint of cream. It is very much so iconic for a Yunnan black tea, at least for me it is, it has all the notes I expect when sniffing a fuzzy gold tea, but with ...

Puttabong, Darjeeling First Flush 2014. from Happy Earth Tea
Style: Darjeeling First Flush – Region: Darjeeling, India80 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 4/5
Oct. 2nd, 2014
This tea brewed an amber colored liquor and immediately gave off a strong punch of apricots, trailed by a musky honey scent. The first taste—still too hot—yielded an indistinct malt-floral taste. Later after allowing to cool further, the liquor still seemed mild and subdued, and so with a third sip, I vigorously ae...

This tea should be called "Campfire Black." It takes like your are drinking smoke combined with black tea. Depending on the quality of black tea used in this blend, this tea is excellent. If the Assam, for instance, is not top quality, then it can suffer from too much smoke and not enough tannins. Much like a similar ...

This was a very light brew with a bright golden color, and it smelled immediately of mint and other subtle floral and green fragrances. The sense of mint carried into the taste and mouthfeel, and it was never earthy or grassy. Later in the cup, I noticed a bit of the scent of asparagus. It was a really soft, beautiful ...
