Sencha Superior from Rishi Tea

Style: Sencha – Region: Shizuoka, Japan

63 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 2/5
Nov. 3rd, 2010

Brews a clear golden color, less opaque than most Sencha. Aroma seaweedy and vegetal, and only slightly grassy. Relatively smooth flavor, with a little astringency and bitterness. Overall this is a very typical sencha. Nothing about it stands out.

Rishi's brewing instructions result in a cup that on the weak sid...

A mild, pleasant Earl. Clearly good quality tea and bergamot. Clearly too much packaging.

Black Currant from Tea Forte

83 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 3/5
Nov. 2nd, 2010

This the first Black Currant that I've had lately that hasn't smelled horrid. In fact, it is very nice and fruity, actually smelling and tasting like black currants. I wish more companies knew how to do theirs as well. I must give them low marks for their packaging, with is too much and probably why it is so expensi...

Vietnam Black Tea from Simpson & Vail

Style: Black Tea – Region: Vietnam

63 / 100 Aroma: 6/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 4/5
Nov. 2nd, 2010

This is not an exceptional tea, but it is very pleasant and gentle. There are hints of malt and nuts, with a breath of spiciness and a little ping of citrus. I could easily see blending this with other black teas, especially one that had too much flavoring added or one you wanted to stretch out.

Style: Chai / Spiced Tea – Region: Blend

83 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 3/5
Nov. 2nd, 2010

this is definitely my favorite chai blend.
i've tried several others (searching for a cheaper alternative), including a couple from an indian vendor, and they all fell short of rishi's.

as alex wrote in his review, it is a strong blend with plenty of spice (many other blends fail here). and unlike a lot of other b...

2.3g in 8oz water at 190F (for ~3mins? didn't keep track)

the liquor is smooth. not bitter.
has some sweetness to the aroma. roasty, indeed. it is earthy, and i guess it's reminiscent of fall leaves. i didn't really detect mushroom. it really reminds me of roasted peanuts.

2nd infusion: 8oz, 195F, ~5 mins

This became my favorite pre-blended chai upon the first sip. It's one of the few that I think is on par with the chai I make on my own--possibly because the blend of spices is very close to what I would use myself. I did not sweeten it or use milk; I imagine I'd like it with milk, but I think it's plenty smooth as is...

Oh, what a lovely tea! Earthy, with a heavy influence of red-wine cask, a touch of smoke, a hint of acid. And that's just the smell of the dry leaves and brewing tea. Winey, earthy, sharp, elegant. Just a super tea. At 5 minutes, it has some rough edges, but a small shot of cream took care of those very nicely.

Hear me roar! I can't tell if I like it or not, but it is definitely smokey. But it is also very smooth and mellow. I don't think those unfamiliar with LS would like it. It's very good, but somehow, for me, the smoke is a bit wrong.

A smoothie it is. If it weren't for all the spice, woodsiness and a tiny sharp edge, it could just slide down so effortlessly. It smells like new pencils, an old barn in the sun, a little spice, a little chocolate, autumn leaves and an illusive sharpness. It tastes pretty much that way, also. Truly a lovely tea. ...

Ceylon is not my favorite type of black tea, but I'm always blown away by what Rishi manages to come up with, so I was curious to try this one.

Brewed as recommended, this cup is dark but clear, and of below-average overall strength for a black tea. However, it is also more full-bodied than average. The aroma is s...

A lovely tea. Almost delicate, almost sweet, almost berry-like. Not much like the Ceylon teas it supposedly resembles. I think it could stand up easily to it's big brother, Darjeeling. It is bright, but smooth, with no tannic overtones. It is also Organic!

On its own, this is a kind of ho-hum tea, tastingkind of woody and over-roasted, without any grapiness to speak of. However, I added some cream to it and that rounded out all the rough edges and made it sweeter and good enough to have 3 cups in a row.

Very rich, smooth, deep, dark and delicious. Don't worry about the pu-erh, it just provides a good grounding note for the other teas and the chocolate. Many people are afraid of pu-erh and this gussied up version might be a good beginning. I would call this a treat for breakfast, as I would prefer a plainer tea, but...

I found this tea to be very different based on how it is brewed.

The light, flat quality of the dry leaf reminds me of dragon well, but the similarity ends there. This tea brews a very clear greenish-yellow color. Regardless of how strongly you brew it, it comes out completely transparent: there's almost no opacit...

One of the best of the Kusmi teas. Light and fragrant, well-balanced, really pleasant. It lacks the heaviness that many of their teas have, which is good in the evening. Perhaps with some cinammon toast to end the day.

The essence of Russian tea. It has an incense like quality that speaks of mystery. It is somewhat heavy, but light at the same time. It just takes you to a samovar on the sideboard and glasses of tea in the afternoon.

This has a bit of malt, a bit of astringency, maybe the barest hint of floral. It is a good tea for plain tea drinkers, but can take milk and sugar as well. The Brits are particularly good at blending teas that are always good if not full of nuance or "differentness". Most of the teas of this style I save for mornin...

Who whee, this is most definitely a breakfast tea. It is about as straigtforward an English style tea as you can get. No nuances, just good black tea, the kind you find in every English pot. I would only brew it for 3.5 - 4 minutes as it does tend to get a bit tannic. Just made for cream and sugar, if you like swee...
