China Breakfast from Rishi Tea

Style: Yunnan Red – Region: Yunnan, China

70 / 100 Aroma: 9/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 3/5
Nov. 3rd, 2009

Wow. I love the aroma of this tea...it is much more vegetal than most black teas, clean and fresh, and yet warm too. Smooth and yet relatively full-bodied, but thin relative to some breakfast teas. No astringency.

I do notice the peppery tones characteristic of a dian hong. The aroma is pleasingly complex. Ther...

South African Honeybush Superior Organic from Upton Tea Imports

Style: Honeybush – Region: South Africa

60 / 100 Aroma: 5/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 4/5
Nov. 1st, 2009

The dry leaves have a fruitier aroma than the brewed tea, which is almost totally devoid of fruitiness, and is more earthy and slightly spicy. Tones of black pepper in the aroma.

Very full-bodied. Aftertaste is a bit flat. Not terribly complex in the aroma, but still enjoyable. I prefer Adagio's honeybush, which...

Organic Wild Rooibos Pyramid Tea from Equal Exchange

Style: Rooibos – Region: South Africa

70 / 100 Aroma: 6/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 3/5
Nov. 1st, 2009

Aroma darker and more earthy, less fruity, than other rooibos I've tried. Flavor smooth but with some zing to it, without being bitter or too sour. Some astringency, but not too much.

I like this much, much better than other "non-wild" red rooiboses that I've tried. Although I still prefer green rooibos, this is ...

Breathe Deep from Yogi Tea

67 / 100 Aroma: 6/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 3/5
Nov. 1st, 2009

Smooth, naturally sweet, with licorice dominating the aroma, and a fair amount of mintiness present. Mellower than I expected for a tea with mint and eucalyptus. Soothing.

I imagine this one would also be good for a sore throat, as it seems to sooth irritation in addition to clearing your head. It also tastes pre...

Rooibos from Adagio Teas

Style: Rooibos – Region: South Africa

47 / 100 Aroma: 5/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 2/5
Oct. 31st, 2009

The dry leaf is strongly aromatic but the brewed tea is only moderately so. Smooth, a bit grassier and much less fruity than most rooibos. Very thin, however. A bit dry tasting, a little bit sour, and leaves a funny aftertaste that builds as you drink the cup.

Of the teas I've tried from Adagio, this was my least...

Organic Darjeeling Black Pyramid Tea from Equal Exchange

Style: Darjeeling Black Tea – Region: Darjeeling, India

80 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 4/5
Oct. 31st, 2009

Aroma spicy, unusually vegetal for a tea this dark, and unusually malty for a Darjeeling. Very interesting and complex! Dark liquor and tastes more like other black teas than most Darjeelings; I would not describe it as "golden" or "light". Remarkably bold and full-bodied and yet with little bitterness or astringenc...

Honeybush from Adagio Teas

63 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 2/5 Value: 4/5
Oct. 30th, 2009

Very sweet and fruity; this is without a doubt the sweetest and fruitiest honeybush I've ever tried. Almost candy-like, with an aroma like dried fruit. Less of the earthy or straw-like tones that I was expected.

A bit light and thin-bodied, however. Less rich than other honeybush I've tried.

I'm still not sure...

57 / 100 Aroma: 6/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 2/5
Oct. 29th, 2009

Beautifully fragrant leaves and beautifully fragrant brewed tea. Sweet, light, orchid-like floral aroma. Weak flavor, with a very clean taste...sweet with a hint of tanginess and no bitterness. Upon drinking, what seemed like a pleasantly strong aroma becomes too weak.

Adagio recommends brewing 5 minutes with 180...

Oct. 29th, 2009

A gentle and mild herbal tea. Brews an orange color. A hint of sourness but not too much, and not much bitterness either. None of the aromas dominate. In spite of the main ingredient being mint, I don't notice the mint all that much...pretty mellow.

Calm Chamomile Filterbags from Tazo Tea

73 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 4/5
Oct. 28th, 2009

This is without a doubt one of my favorite Tazo teas and also one of my favorite herbal teas. It balances just the right amount of chamomile with other ingredients so that there's a lot of chamomile in the aroma but there's also a lot of other stuff going on too. Unlike some of Tazo's other teas, this one is not too...

Aroma light, vegetal, honey-like, and floral, but unfortunately, also a bit soapy. My main complaint is that this tea is so bland!

Flavor is extremely mild; a hint of sweetness, no bitterness, and absolutely no astringency whatsoever. Very clean aftertaste. More aromatic than flavorful. Although all pouchongs te...

The smell of this tea is just what you'd expect from the flavor name - strong and sweet. Its taste is more tea-like than the smell would lead you to believe, which to me, is welcome. It could be a bit stronger, though.

Dancong Aria from Adagio Teas

67 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 3/5
Oct. 27th, 2009

Aroma very complex with a lot of things going on. The dark leaves surprisingly brew a light amber liquor that is very clear. Initially a strong fruity aroma like dried apricot, some vegetal tones. Upon drinking, a bit peppery. Very smooth and clean. No bitterness, rather sweet, but with some astringency. A bit th...

Vanilla Chai Black Tea from Bigelow Tea

The spices actually blend pretty well and in spite of the artificial flavoring, this tea is much more natural tasting than I had expected. No noticeable tea aroma, just vanilla and some spice. Creamy and smooth.

I would appreciate a stronger tea presence and perhaps more spice.

Passion Filterbag from Tazo Tea

30 / 100 Aroma: 6/10 Flavor: 1/5 Value: 1/5
Oct. 22nd, 2009

While I love the aroma of this tea, it is so sour as to be completely undrinkable. I have found a way to remedy this by running cold water over the teabag for about 15 seconds before brewing it. This leaves most of the aroma intact but removes most of the sourness. The resulting tea is very enjoyable.

I'm rating ...

Style: Pu-erh Tea – Region: Yunnan, China

53 / 100 Aroma: 5/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 4/5
Oct. 20th, 2009

This is not my favorite loose-leaf ripened pu-erh. It's palatable and noticeably better than random ones I've sampled. The aroma is dusty, not terribly rich or complex. Pretty smooth flavor. Enjoyable. I prefer ZH26.

And of course, I really strongly prefer Sheng Pu-erh. I do not think Pu-erh is Upton's strong ...

Oct. 20th, 2009

Perhaps I'm not a "discerning pu-erh enthusiast" but I failed to appreciate this one any more than Upton's basic loose pu-erh, and it's about twice the price. The aroma is somehow lighter and less rich and earthy. It does have a clean aftertaste as described, but it's less intensely aromatic. I prefer ZH26 and altho...

I find this pu-erh to have a richer and warmer earthy aroma as compared to both ZH20 and ZH65. Very smooth but with some nice complexity. While you can make multiple infusions with this tea, later infusions lose some of the complexity...I usually make only one very long infusion.

In the end though? I don't really...

English Teatime from Bigelow Tea

53 / 100 Aroma: 6/10 Flavor: 1/5 Value: 3/5
Oct. 18th, 2009

Aroma is mellow, warm, and keemun-like. But this tea is much more bitter and astringent than most keemuns--unpleasantly so. The bitterness sinks to the bottom of the cup, leaving an unpleasant surprise ending to a tea that starts out very smooth.

I recommend brewing this one briefly, only a minute or two, for best...

Oct. 18th, 2009

One thing I love about this tea is that it's lemony without being sour, which is something you cannot achieve by squeezing a lemon into your black tea.

I don't really notice the spice that much, but that's ok with me. The black tea is weak and nondescript. I would appreciate a richer and more complex aroma to the ...

I swear this tastes like it has a significant amount of pu-erh in it...it has that earthy, dust-like quality to it. I never used to like lipton's decaf until I started liking pu-erh and then my appreciation of it increased slightly--but only very slightly. It really could be a lot more bland than it is. But it's sti...

Jasmine Green Tea from Bigelow Tea

50 / 100 Aroma: 3/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 3/5
Oct. 18th, 2009

The floral scent is much weaker than in some Jasmines but it's pleasant; this is a very smooth tea, without the bitterness or astringency that plagues many of the cheaper teabag Jasmines. My only complaint is that I wish the aroma were overall stronger, both of the tea and the Jasmine.
