Bai Mudan White Tea from Foojoy
Style: White Peony Tea – Region: Fujian, China73 / 100 Aroma: 6/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 5/5
Jun. 25th, 2011
The aroma of this tea is a bit mild and slightly floral. The aroma and taste are both delicate and refreshing, and a bit toasty. This Bai Mudan has no bitterness or astringency, and is quite full and smooth, with some subtle sweetness. Much better than supermarket white teas, to be sure. From the first cup, I like this...

Style: Yunnan Red – Region: Yunnan, China73 / 100 Aroma: 6/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 4/5
Jun. 24th, 2011
Color: dark brown with hints of amber; has a heavy viscosity and a good bit of cloudiness
Nose: nuts and green spice herbs with a touch of top soil
Taste: hint of walnut but otherwise very generic on the front end, no flavors stick out; again the walnut and not much else on the midpallete, it feels like its leading t...
Pai Mu Tan from Novus Tea
Style: White Peony Tea – Region: China53 / 100 Aroma: 5/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 2/5
Jun. 24th, 2011
Produces an amber brew with a light, floral aroma, and underlying tones of caramel and autumn leaves. There's also a noticeable fishy quality to the aroma, however, which I find unpleasant. Flavor is surprisingly metallic, although not necessarily in a bad way. Clear, clean, a bit crisp.
I recommend a longer stee...
Dragon Well Green Tea from Novus Tea
Style: Dragon Well (Long Jing) – Region: China73 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 4/5
Jun. 23rd, 2011
I tend to not like these high-end tea bag teas, and I tend to find them overpriced, but this one is surprisingly good. On par with some loose-leaf dragon well / lung ching that I've had, but with its own unique twist.
I found this tea to be surprisingly chamomile-like in aroma, but obviously with a caffeine kick, a...
Golden Monkey Black Tea from Teavana
Style: Golden Monkey – Region: Fujian, China33 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 1/5 Value: 1/5
Jun. 18th, 2011
Big disappointment! This tea has zero flavor. I'm a fan of strong black teas. Usually buy my tea in India and bring it back. This chinese tea smelled quite good in the shop, but the flavor is nil. Won't buy this again. Flat, boring, nothing.

Style: Green Tea – Region: China83 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 5/5
Jun. 13th, 2011
I greatly enjoyed this tea. Brewed as instructed, this tea produces a rich, strongly aromatic cup.
Interesting and quite different from other Chinese green teas I have tried. At first I thought it a bit odd: while this is a very intensely aromatic and flavorful tea, the flavor and aroma are both oddly muted; it's ...
Hubei Province Keemun Ji Hong from Upton Tea Imports
Style: Keemun – Region: Hubei, China70 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 5/5
Jun. 12th, 2011
The second Hubei Keemun I've tried, and it is immediately recognizable as a Hubei Keemun: the same aroma of chicken soup, the earthy and fruity Keemun tones weaker and taking a back burner, and a slight usually edginess not present in Anhui Keemuns.
Flavor is overall very sweet, there are even some tones of honey in...
Tropical China Black from Bromley Tea
Style: Fruit Black Tea – Region: China93 / 100 Aroma: 10/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 4/5
Jun. 11th, 2011
It was tasty enough to drink without added sweetening.

Style: Genmaicha – Region: China63 / 100 Aroma: 5/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 4/5
May. 29th, 2011
My first Genmaicha. Usually I drink Chinese teas, or at least Chinese style teas, so this is a bit of a departure for me.
This tea does not retain much of its Sencha characteristics, or at least they are somewhat covered up in the general style. The tea is brewed to a light color, a bit surprising for the aroma and ...
China Green Tea from Foojoy
Style: Green Tea – Region: China60 / 100 Aroma: 5/10 Flavor: 2/5 Value: 5/5
May. 29th, 2011
This tea has a mild and slightly vegetal aroma. The taste is mild, smooth, and slightly sweet. The tea brews to a light greenish / golden color. Overall, this is a mild but nice green tea.
Originally I wrote a pretty scathing review of this tea, most of which I have removed. Taken for what it is, this is a mild and ...
Panyang Tippy Golden Needles Imperial from Upton Tea Imports
Style: Panyang Congou – Region: Fujian, China87 / 100 Aroma: 9/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 5/5
May. 28th, 2011
Aroma toasty and caramely, like the crust of a pastry. This tea is so reminiscent of pastry that if I close my eyes, I almost picture there being a baked good, rather than a cup of tea, in front of me.
Dark, rich, but with a pleasingly smooth flavor. Finish leaves a surprisingly lightness on the palate, and a fain...
China Classic Oolong from Foojoy
Style: Oolong Tea – Region: Fujian, China70 / 100 Aroma: 6/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 5/5
May. 21st, 2011
The Chinese name printed on the packaging for China Classic Oolong sheds some light on this tea. It reads as Fuzi Zhongguo Minnan Wulong Cha, or "Foojoy Chinese Minnan Wulong Tea." Here, Minnan refers to the southern region of Fujian province. Therefore, a more accurate English name for this tea, following the Chinese,...

Style: Jasmine Tea – Region: China67 / 100 Aroma: 6/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 4/5
May. 21st, 2011
For my first cup of this tea, I used water that had just finished coming to a boil, and then I accidentally forgot about the cup for at least five minutes. It turned out very nicely, though. The tea brews to a deep golden color, and is very fragrant. The aroma is essentially similar to other jasmine teas I have had. Th...

May. 21st, 2011
Ten Ren's Longjing brews to a golden-green color, and has a strong smoky vegetal aroma. This tea has a crisp finish and some real bite, different from a typical Longjing. Actually, this aspect of it is more similar to the bite and "rawness" of a Chinese red tea.
The flavor of this tea is a bit vegetal similar to its...
Lungching Green Tea from Foojoy
Style: Dragon Well (Long Jing) – Region: China80 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 5/5
May. 21st, 2011
When seeing the price and packaging of these Foojoy teas, my initial impression was that they must be low quality at such a price point. Like my experience with Tenren, this initial impression has turned out to be wrong.
This Longjing is a fine representative of the style in a teabag. The tea brews to a golden color...
Chinese Oolong from Bigelow Tea
Style: Oolong Tea – Region: China43 / 100 Aroma: 5/10 Flavor: 2/5 Value: 3/5
May. 16th, 2011
The aroma of this tea is sweet, full, and strong. The tea brews to a dark amber brown, and is quite opaque for this type of tea. The tea itself is quite full-bodied and warming, which is a nice quality. The initial taste of the tea is full and rich, but halfway through a sip, the flavor becomes flat, boring, and lifele...

May. 16th, 2011
The following review is of China Green Tips in a normal tea bag, as opposed to the whole-leaf satchet version.
True to its name, the aroma and the flavor of China Green Tips are indeed similar to the vegetal and fresh qualities of a Zhejiang green tea made from small and vibrant leaves. Apart from its basic characte...

May. 13th, 2011
I was eager to try this one to see what a better Chinese attempt at gyokuro could produce, and I must say, this tea impressed me a fair amount, and was definitely worth trying.
Dry leaf has a pleasing aroma of a typical, good Japanese green tea. Bold green color.
I brewed this with a lower temperature, 160, typi...
China Congou Panyang (Panyong) from Upton Tea Imports
Style: Panyang Congou – Region: China67 / 100 Aroma: 5/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 5/5
May. 2nd, 2011
Clean tasting, mild, with a slightly bitter caramel-like quality. A bit flat, simple tasting, but very pleasant. Has a cooling quality, even when hot, and I think it would make a very classic iced tea.
I was expecting this tea to be similar to Upton's ZP20, Panyang Congou Select, because of the similar name, but i...
Dragon Pearl Jasmine from Harney and Sons
Style: Jasmine Pearls – Region: Fujian, China90 / 100 Aroma: 10/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 4/5
May. 1st, 2011
I was pleasantly surprised by this Jasmine. Typically I find that Jasmine teas smell fantastic but brew super bitter and tasteless. Dragon Pearl Jasmine, on the other hand, was both aromatic and flavorful without being overpowering. A solid choice for Jasmine.

Apr. 24th, 2011
I never thought I'd say this, but I encountered the first truly bad tea from Upton. The dry leaf had a stale smell, none of the fresh grassy tones that sencha usually has. I would not recognize this as sencha from the aroma of the dry leaf, nor from the brewed cup. The leaf and the color of the cup looks more like b...

A delightful and complex black tea. Very robust and full-bodied, moderate bitterness, but not overly caffeinated. Aroma simultaneously a little smoky, fruity, and malty, with no one quality dominating the others. Very balanced. Very pleasing.
I can see this becoming a favorite everyday black tea for me: it is mu...
Tie Guan Yin traditional charcoal roast Master Grade from Life in Teacup
Style: Tie Guan Yin – Region: Anxi, Fujian, China100 / 100 Aroma: 10/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 5/5
Apr. 6th, 2011
(2009 Harvest) This is an impressive tea, and the first perfect rating I've ever given here. Life in Teacup provided me with a sample generous enough to experiment a bit with brewing.
This tea is so intensely flavorful and aromatic, that I settled on using a little less than 1 teaspoon of leaf, and brewed four infu...
Pinhead Gunpowder from thepuriTea
Style: Gunpowder Green Tea – Region: China70 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 4/5
Mar. 28th, 2011
To my mind, these are not pinheads, which I think are supposed to be smaller than regular gunpowder tea, as they are pretty good sized. I brewed it for about a minute and found it to be floral and vegetal, but also seemed to carry some sesame seed in it. The second infusion was for 1.5 minutes and smelled more floral...
