i usually like fruit teas better iced, i don't generally drink them hot- that's my sister's thing more than mine- but i LOVE this one hot. just a little sweetener, and some lemon... oh my god. and of course it's divine iced!

May. 22nd, 2010

i love chai, but i'm trying to cut down the caffiene (decaf just makes me feel cheated, somehow) so i decided to try this herbal "interpretation" of chai. i wasn't expecting much- despite the picture of a tiger on the box i expected this tea to be kind of tame. but curiosity won out, and i made my first cup last night....

one of the best chais i have ever tasted! in fact it has ruined me for most other brands. smooth, yet still enjoyably spicy. and it smells amazing.

Phoenix Mountain Oolong from Peet's Coffee and Tea (Peets)

Style: Dancong Oolong – Region: China

70 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 3/5
May. 20th, 2010

This is Peet's most affordable and gentlest-tasting oolong. It has a nice toasty-grain flavor with hints of fruit, decently complex but not overpowering. Peet's apparently calls it "pungent," but I don't think that's accurate at all.

This tea has an inviting campfire-smoke aroma, but tastes very, very smoky, almost meaty, to the exclusion of the basic tea flavor. If you're looking for a less intense smoky flavor, try the Scottish Breakfast (still a little strong for me) or the Russian Caravan (which I love).

May. 20th, 2010

I know people who swear by this stuff, but I am not one of those people. To me it tastes like steamed spinach, which is not something I want to drink. I'm willing to believe I brewed it incorrectly, but I've tried it a couple of times, once in the presence of an oolong fanatic, and the overcooked-greens flavor was alwa...

Earl Grey Decaffeinated from Twinings

Style: Earl Grey Tea – Region: ?????

33 / 100 Aroma: 4/10 Flavor: 2/5 Value: 1/5
May. 20th, 2010

Exceptionally lemony and citrusy for an Earl Grey...there's only a weak suggestion of the usual bergamot aroma. The aroma is more like candied lemon than Earl Grey tea, and it has an artificial quality to it. The black tea presence is entirely unremarkable...although this tea brews a dark color, there is little other...

I think this tea is OK, but I am a sucker for vanilla black teas. Neither the vanilla nor the tea is top-notch, but you can't beat the value.

Pi Lo Chun Organic Green Tea from Teavana

Style: Bi Luo Chun – Region: China

63 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 2/5
May. 20th, 2010

Aroma is grassy and fruity. The aroma is light and very pleasing...not the most complex I've had for a green tea but certainly very enjoyable. Flavor is very smooth...almost no bitterness and only the faintest hint of astringency if you let the cup brew for a very long time.

I settled on a very different method of...

Vanilla Black Tea from Twinings

30 / 100 Aroma: 2/10 Flavor: 2/5 Value: 1/5
May. 19th, 2010

I disliked this tea...the vanilla aroma is fairly strong but has an artificial quality to it. It also doesn't blend well with the black tea. Admittedly, vanilla-flavored tea is not one of my favorites, but when well executed, it is creamy and smooth and yet having some depth. This one just comes across as vanilla pu...

Tastes like Kool-Aid, basically. I was unable to distinguish any basic tea flavor. And I had to use two teabags per cup to get much flavor at all.

No, thank you.

May. 17th, 2010

If I could drink only one green tea, it would be this one, with its flat, olive-green leaves and irresistible buttery finish. It's very smooth, not bitter or pungent at all, with a deeper, richer flavor than some greens. It does have a vegetal quality, but I'd say the aroma is more like asparagus than grass. I like asp...

May. 17th, 2010

Very smooth with a gentle sweetness. One of the best things about this tea is that it's almost impossible to oversteep to the point of bitterness - worst case scenario, you'll just end up with something grassier, more like green tea than white. It also makes a light, crisp iced tea.

I can't really pick out the adve...

Tension Tamer from Celestial Seasonings

Style: Herbal Tea – Region: ?????

70 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 2/5
May. 17th, 2010

This is one of my favorite of the Celestial Seasonings brand, lacking the tartness of the zingers and the weird aftertastes of some of the ginsengs. The taste is simple and a bit bland, suggestive of camomile. I prefer it with a little more mint and often add a sprig of fresh mint in the summer or a sprinkle of dried i...

Pure Peppermint from Twinings

May. 17th, 2010

Less of the strong peppermint aroma than most peppermint teas...very dark in color, unusually so...more of the general leafy/herbaceous aroma. Not at all sour and very little bitterness or sweetness...this is primarily an aromatic tea.

Noticeably more complexity than Lipton's peppermint. Among bagged peppermint te...

English Breakfast from Harney and Sons

Style: English Breakfast – Region: China

90 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 5/5 Value: 5/5
May. 16th, 2010

Confusingly, the Harney & Sons website says this stuff is 100% Keemun, while the canister implies it's a blend of Keemun and other unnamed black teas. It tastes like Keemun, though, a little smoky, with that vaguely graphite-y aroma. It's pretty smooth, easy to drink without any accoutrements, and has a good, strong, b...

Herbal Revive - Cherries and Madagascan Cinnamon from Twinings

Style: Herbal Tea – Region: Blend

40 / 100 Aroma: 3/10 Flavor: 2/5 Value: 2/5
May. 14th, 2010

This tea brews a deep purplish red color...aroma is strong and artificial...suggestive of maraschino cherries, not like a real cherry. The brewed cup seems like it has a significant amount of hibiscus, both from the color and the sourness--this tea isn't quite as sour as Celestial seasonings' zingers or Tazo's passion...

Winter Solstice Tea from Peet's Coffee and Tea (Peets)

Style: Flavored Black Tea – Region: Blend

83 / 100 Aroma: 9/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 3/5
May. 14th, 2010

As its name implies, this is a seasonal offering, available only around Christmas and priced like a once-a-year indulgence. The flavor is festive, with warming spices and a bright, optimistic note from the orange peel. It has a slightly astringent quality too; I don't know whether that's from the citrus or the Indian t...

Chai Green Tea from Stash Tea

Style: Chai / Spiced Tea – Region: Blend

47 / 100 Aroma: 5/10 Flavor: 2/5 Value: 3/5
May. 14th, 2010

This tea is, for lack of a more academic word, weird. The chai spices and the green tea are not a particularly harmonious combination, resulting in an aftertaste that's a little like biting into a cardamom pod, unpleasantly prickly.

It was an interesting idea, but it definitely doesn't offer that warm fuzzy feeling...

Style: Herbal Tea – Region: Blend

73 / 100 Aroma: 6/10 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 4/5
May. 14th, 2010

Bright, tart, and fruity, with spicy undertones. The hibiscus makes it a brilliant Kool-Aid red, but the flavor is not so sweet and a lot more complex. I like it with honey; I imagine it would also be good iced (Peet's actually serves it iced in summer, but sweetened and mixed with lemonade. Very refreshing.)

May. 14th, 2010

This has a nice smoky flavor, but not too smoky - I can't handle full-strength Lapsang Souchong or even Scottish Breakfast, but this one is blended with other teas in a proportion that I find quite drinkable. (I think it's something like 1/4 Lapsang Souchong, but I don't remember for sure.) It's a great rainy-day tea, ...

May. 14th, 2010

Apricot or peach with ginger is one of my favorite black tea flavorings, so I was excited to try this one. While it has a sweet, gentle flavor with a mild zing, none of the components really shine - I wish I could taste more of the apricot, the ginger, and the tea itself. It makes an okay evening tea, when I want somet...

70 / 100 Aroma: 8/10 Flavor: 3/5 Value: 3/5
May. 13th, 2010

Noticeably different from TJ40...more heavily roasted (tending toward the dark side among all hojicha's I've tried)...very dark brown cup. The aroma is not overwhelmingly roasty, however...there are still a few of the fresh green tea tones present.

Flavor is sour...which I don't like, although there's also a hint o...

Awake English Breakfast Filterbag from Tazo Tea

Style: English Breakfast – Region: Blend

57 / 100 Aroma: 7/10 Flavor: 2/5 Value: 3/5
May. 12th, 2010

Aroma rather complex...there's a hint of maltiness like an Assam, and a fairly strong presence of the light, clean quality of a high-grown Ceylon (as from Nuwara Eliya), and there are some spicy tones as well, including a hint of clove...and it oddly also has a suggestion of orange in there too.

Flavor is very sour....
